Went to check water today on T reg tdi and there is an inch of oil on top of the water in the expansion tank, the car is still running ok without over heating at the moment. Could this be the oil cooler coroded inside or more likely head gasket gone?, i still have full power too. Can i do a check to see if its the oil cooler first instead of scrapping it, thanksĀ

PS there is no creamy gunk on dip stick so looks like its oil in water and not water in oil...

I go with oil cooler, had the same on my mk1

Also when u change it the cooling system will need a damn good flushing out as the oil destroyed all the water hoses on mine, luckily its summer so u wont be loosing antifreeze when u drop the water

I used washing detergent in mine!!liquid of course, stuck in run for a day dropped it out and flushed. Repeated a couple of times and all was well
