a18nkd Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 Hi all wondering if anyone can help I have noticed the last few days my aux heater is smoking really badly I first noticed when one morning I pulled up to a round about and had to wait there for a minute or so and in that time the whole outside of the car was in a big cloud of smoke (I thought the oil seals had gone on my turbo again there was that much smoke) until I got off the round about pulled in turned the engine off straight away as I did last time the oil seals went but it was still smoking so I checked underneath and found it to be from the aux heater everything seems ok but it smokes like hell anyone got any ideas is it just the glow plug or something like that once the car has warmed up it seems to be fine but the heater isn't on then any ideas thanks this is a pic from today not as bad as the other day tho Quote
billywizzo Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 typical glow plug failure. There will be lots of posts about how to change it.I would recommend that you spend the money and get the newer plug with the wires attached ( bit trickier to fit as requires dewiring and rewiring the plug) and change the gauze the plug goes in to. tom-tom1 Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 Agree, glow plug failure, happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Seems to be a build up of fuel, had to remove fuse until I could sort it out. Quote
gregers Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 now wait until you get someone banging on your window saying your cars on fire, like some have had. :o :lol:iirc its fuse 11 to stop the heater firing up? Quote
chrispb123456 Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 Greg iirc fuse 24 on the MK1.Fuse 12 on the MK2 Quote
gregers Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 oops :blush:where did i get 11 from??? :28: Quote
a18nkd Posted April 5, 2013 Author Report Posted April 5, 2013 cheers all will take the fuse out until it's fixed definitely fuse 24 then ? lol Quote

a18nkd Posted October 18, 2013 Author Report Posted October 18, 2013 hi all I have changed the offending heater plug and put the pump back on but as yet I have not heard it kick in yet is there any way I can check that I have the connections connected properly i.e should there be a buzzing noise from the heater also I have noticed some bubbles in the fuel line to it is this why its not firing up? or will the pump get rid of those bubbles when it works I have put fuse 24 back in could the connection inside the pump not be connected thanks Quote
chrispb123456 Posted October 18, 2013 Report Posted October 18, 2013 Ambient air switch is 5 deg c on a MK1 so to test the heater you will need to bridge the two wires to fool the heater into starting unless of course it's really really cold where you are.The diesel supply will self bleed when operating. Quote
a18nkd Posted October 18, 2013 Author Report Posted October 18, 2013 cheers chris do you know where? or which wires? I need to bridge and thanks for the reply Quote
chrispb123456 Posted October 18, 2013 Report Posted October 18, 2013 It's clipped to the wiper linkage, behind the battery once you have removed the bulkhead tray. Quote
a18nkd Posted October 20, 2013 Author Report Posted October 20, 2013 cheers chris will have a look once the other half gets sorted and finally goes to the shops yawn! Quote
a18nkd Posted October 20, 2013 Author Report Posted October 20, 2013 cheers chris bridging the temp switch worked but I didn't need to take bulk head off I could get to it from the gap where the cabin filter is also it fired up the turned off a few seconds after so with the ignition on I used a syringe to draw the diesel through the pipe after about 4 or 5 mins I started to get fuel so popped it back on pump and it fired up a little smoke to begin with but soon cleared and could feel the heat from it's exhaust so it must have worked at lest I know it should kick in now and thanks for your help one last thing is the fuse 24 a 25amp or 20 amp thanks Quote
chrispb123456 Posted October 21, 2013 Report Posted October 21, 2013 25 AmpYou must have small hands to get in that gap. Quote
a18nkd Posted October 23, 2013 Author Report Posted October 23, 2013 cheers chris I got the right one in and I have long skinny arms they get most places Quote
xavier Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 would a heater from a mk2 sharan circa 2002 likely to be compatible with my mk2 galaxy? Quote
gregers Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 well considering the tdi mk2 galaxy is about 90% vw then yes, when mine went fords told me they had to order it from vw,then repackage it and add there 40% on top. Quote
xavier Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Thanks gregers, I managed to check the part nos too and they match. Decided to try a second hand unit, just need to think of a way to test the thing without having to plug / plumb it all in. On second thoughts, plumbing it in might actually be the best way to check it! Quote
chrispb123456 Posted October 28, 2013 Report Posted October 28, 2013 To test it Quickly without completely putting it back, and assuming you have plugged the coolant pipes on the carConnect the fuel pipe and the multiplug then connect your garden hose to the inlet and just let the water run through it, bridge the air sensor on wiper link, don't worry about exhaust pipe/inletStart the car, you should hear the combustion fan spin up first then will start to fire up. Quote
xavier Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 be amazed it if works to be honest but it saves me welding my exhaust back on! Quote
xavier Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 connected it up just to check fault codes. Noted those, then cleared them. Got a different fault code. Cleared that then I could hear the dosing pump clicking and I presume the glow plug was hot as there was smoke coming out of the diesel line connection. Will plug in the diesel line tomorrow and test with a hose. Initial faults were : 5 Faults Found:01410 - Heater Over-Temp 06-00 - Signal too High01410 - Shareware Version.
