shepheap Posted March 11, 2013 Report Posted March 11, 2013 I have a 2003 1.9 130 Galaxy with 127k miles.I'm not yet suffering any power issues but have noticed a slight increase in the amout of smoke (black) on acceleration, but I have started to hear more 'mechanical' noise from what I believe to be the turbo. In the last few days I have also heard a rather nasty mechanical whine, which I assume is coming form the turbo due to feeling it through the air box, just after the engine is turned off, particularly if the engine RPM is high when turned off.Would anyone like to speculate as to what may be the problem? No fault codes at the moment )apart from a never ending flame out on the aux heater!) Quote
xavier Posted March 11, 2013 Report Posted March 11, 2013 > particularly if the engine RPM is high when turned off yeah, don't do this. let it return to idle before switching off. I usually give mine 20-30 secs to cool down at idle before switching off. Quote

shepheap Posted March 13, 2013 Author Report Posted March 13, 2013 Any recommendations for sourcing a replacement turbo? Its an 130 ASZ1 engine. New or possibly reconditioned (if thought worthwhile )Thanks. Quote

Currently my local garage is going to cost around £700+ for the turbo plus parts, fitting etc totaling around £1200 Quote
xavier Posted March 16, 2013 Report Posted March 16, 2013 are you sure it's the turbo? Are there any other symptoms? Does the car drive fine? Quote
shepheap Posted March 17, 2013 Author Report Posted March 17, 2013 are you sure it's the turbo? Are there any other symptoms? Does the car drive fine?It drives OK (apart from some suspension rattles that have started since the drive shafts were changed!). There is no loss of performance, just some background noise which previously wasnt there. It was this noise that started me exploring and resulted in hearing the loud 'whine' if the engines revs were high when turned off. The noise can also be felt through the air box as the engine shuts down.Local garage had it in and siad the turbo ws on its way out. Quote
seatkid Posted March 17, 2013 Report Posted March 17, 2013 (edited) I believe the main reason for turbo failure is lack of lubrication due to the oil feed pipe getting blocked which in turn is due to lack of oil changes or substandard oil. Whistle/whine is caused by unbalance and there will always be some though it sholud be inaudible except on switch off (when hot) when a gentle whistle will be heard. Some black smoke under hard acceleration is usual when the car hasnt been used hard and soot has accumulated in the exhaust. Try an italian tune up i.e. hard accelleration cycle from low revs in 3rd gear to max revs in 3rd gear and hold at max revs for 10-15 secs, repeat several times, checking mirror for clouds of black billowing out the back, - watch you dont brake any traffic laws and show some courtesy for the poor sod following behind you. This will also remove some of the crap stuck in the turbo/egr. Oh.....and better dont try this if your cambelt is way overdue a change!!! Edited March 17, 2013 by seatkid Quote
jipninty Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 take the pipe going to inlel manifold and look for oil, a small amount is ok, if it is dripping wet this could indicate turbo seals Quote
xavier Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 Just so I'm clear, how frequently should the oil / oil filter be changed on the mk2 1.9? Quote
chrispb123456 Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 Fords say 10.000 but less is better. Quote
Trislander Posted May 20, 2013 Report Posted May 20, 2013 Why not send your turbo off to reconditioned that'll save money but you'll need maybe a week if where the vehicle is not required . Recon turbo around £300 from midland turbos I think when I called last Quote
