hi all

as title suggest I've got a 2000 1.9tdi galaxy currently have problems when I accelerate off from first gear I get a knocking and metal grinding sound. now I've not lost my drive yet but been told likely to be the gear box cv. question is....is this the drive shaft needs replacing? it sounds like noise is from nearside however reading other threads it mentions it would be offside. hope this makes sense and somebody can advise further

 thanks

i believe the o/s (longer) drive shaft is the more common for failing. i've had to do a few. the gearbox is on the n/s, with the cv joint of the o/s shaft roughly in the middle.

jack the car up & sit on axle stands.

get underneath & holding the shaft either side of the joint, try twisting to feel for play within the joint itself.

it can make a similar noise to wheel bearings, so also check them.

Have you checked the rear engine mounting (roll restrictor) for play, can you rock the engine back and forth?

The galaxy driveshaft iirc are the same either side except the O/S has an intermediate shaft with splines that wear and can cause total drive failure when the splines fail.

Worn CV joints are more noticeable when cornering and tend to quieten when in a straight line.

Worn wheel bearings tend to whine as road speed increases and is also more noticeable when cornering.

Another possibility is your DMF (duel mass flywheel) is breaking up with noises and vibration

the rear engine mount was changed a few months ago it was only a salvage one but was in very good condition

it's not wheel bearings as no whining

I thought initially maybe the cv joint but it does the "clicking" when I pull in a straight line and slowing down as well as cornering after about 3 gear it's not noticeable

My MK II has the same length on both sides, there is an Intermediate shaft between the Gearbox and driveshaft on the offside (drivers). I replaced my nearside driveshaft with one of ->these <- from ebay as I had a vibration at around 20mph in any gear.  I also did the lower balljoint at the same time, which was lucky as it turned out to have a split boot (even worse after I had seperated the joint!).

It was a lot less faffing around than trying to replace/grease/get the boot on the CV joint and I have bought a second "set" for when I need to replace the other side.  I did see a lot of forum threads that mentioned split inner tri-axial joints (the driveshaft joint on the "gearbox" end) and saw some in Galaxy's I looked at when searching for the vehicle I eventually bought.

Obviously I couldn't say for certain as I haven't seen heard the car.  There are FAR more experienced members than I who could diagnose it.

My guess, and it is a guess, would be that it is the inboard triaxial joint (maybe the wrong name but it's something like that), the one that joins the shaft to the gearbox.  If you look at the linked item above it's the end on the right.  As I said for the price above it would be worth doing the whole driveshaft as this should eliminate the possibility it is the inner CV joint (gearbox end), outer CV joint (wheel end) and that the shaft itself is out of balance.

Even if you get a garage to do it, you should be able to provide the part(s) yourself and just pay the labour.  It should actually be a simpler job to replace the driveshaft than to repair/replace the CV joint.

Good luck.

cheers for the info

basically best way I can describe is a clunk noise when I pull off in 1st gear also maybe 2nd and when I break to come to a stop. sometimes as I turn the steering wheel also.

it does sound like it's coming from nearside however I can feel it through the floor on drivers side

I'm gonna look at getting it ordered tomorrow

After reading this check subframe mounting bolts are tight, worth a look.

Will do don't think it will be but I'll look into it anyway

I appreciate I'm not the best at describing it but it's a cluck and squeaky noise (like a door hinge opening that needs oiling) :-)

this car confuses me. i use it as a cab so high mileage. ive done 500 miles in last 3 days for 2 days ive not had any knocking noise but still some squeaky noise. last night drove 180 miles hit endless speed bumps etc no knocking or squeaky noise

talk about confused

a mate (untrained eye) has kindly had a look for me as the knocking has now come back and now when i turn the wheel also clicks and knocks. he believes s the wishbone bush is worn. he can see some movement. does this sound right? if so how much u looking at for a new wishbone and fitting....roughly?
