I have been advised that my 2.0l TDCi 08 plate galaxy needs a new turbo at a cost of £1300.

After posting on this website I enquired around for a reconditioned turbo as a cheaper option.

My local garage then informed me that as my cars turbo was a 'variable vein' turbo, I could not use a reconditioned turbo.

Can anyone please advise whether they are right and if so why?

In addition, I have now driven 5k miles (current mileage 55k) since the first signs / noise from engine indicating turbo trouble...am I just lucky, or can these cars go on for a while before actually needing the turbo changing?

Load of tosh, recon VVT can be sourced, but they need to be balanced both on the shaft (vibration) and airflow. Who advised you that the turbo was on it's way out and what are the symptoms, if any?

Thanks for your response, it was the ford dealership who diagnosed replacement turbo required, the symptoms (5k miles ago) is the 'police siren ' like noise from engine when accelerating, sounds like a police siren in the distance. however no loss of power or any other symptoms, noise is noticeable but not when radio is on!...what do you think?

Well, my wife's recently purchased 56 plate mk3 2.0 TDCi Galaxy makes exactly the noise you describe.

I had the car AA checked when we bought it a few weeks ago, & the turbo (amongst other things) was given a clean bill of health.

Performance is fine with no excessive smoke issues.

We're continuing onwards in the hope that it's isn't a problem - if anyone knows different, please shout!  :)

In any case, I would be somewhat wary of a Ford main dealer saying you need a new turbo unless you notice any performance or mechanical issues - lots of smoke, poor engine performance, etc. - the more traditional indicators of a damaged turbo.

Of course, this Ford dealer my simply be erring on the side of caution, but life has taught me to be a bit cynical   ;)

Life has also taught me to find a local independent garage you can trust & give Ford main dealers a wide birth.

A case in point: My 05 mk2 TDCi Focus I also bought recently had a full Ford service history from new - 8
