The good news is that the good old diesel engine is still going strong however over the space of a week the following issues arose in order of failure:-

r/o/s door lock would not open - cannot open it manually either.

tailgate lock wont open - been unable to open boot manually (makes all the right noises, just refuses to unlock/open).

the fog light on the dash comes on automatically when ignition started - found that the f/o/s fog light was out.  (not changed it yet as it is the least of my worries and never use them).

Rear windscreen demister and wipers not working.  (front demister intermittent)

Reversing lights not working.

Initially I disconnected the battery for short time in the hope that it would magically repair the faults. It didn't work.  I checked all the fuses but they are all looking perky and intact.  I then hoped that we would have a period of dry weather long enough to 'dry out' the problem.  Living in Scotland that was a tough ask.  Needless to say the faults still exist...

In the last couple of years I have had the wiring repaired in the tailgate.  The problem is I can't get the boot open to access the wiring.  I am no mechanic and have asked my nephew to help me...  Any advice or directions would be appreciated.

My Galaxy has had a few niggles and scrapes and is not the prettiest, but has kept going despite it all.  It only has 110 miles on the clock so I hope the engine will keep going for a bit longer.

Welcome to the forum.

Sounds like you have the wiring problem in the gaiter again? did you cut the bad bits right out and solder in new cables? or just rejoin the old cables.

The latter always fails when the joint is in the gaiter.

You should be able to open the tailgate using the key providing it's not seized up from lack of use, turning the key fully anticlockwise unlocks.

Thanks chris for your reply. I believe the wires were soldered and not cut out so that is probably the cause. Even with the key the boot wont unlock. It makes all the right noises when you turn the key, it just wont release the lock. I know the lock hasn't seized as it opened the day after my nephew took the high brake light fitting off. Haven't been able to open since. I hope u were at work when you replied and not suffering with insomnia.

Hi I'm sorry to say but if the tailgate cannot be opened from the outside the only other option is to break the interior trim and then release it from inside. The list of things not working on the tailgate all sound like a wiring repair again but the o/s/r door problem is odd, the only problem I have had with a rear door lock was when the cable from the interior handle broke is your handle floppy?

Best wishes

That's strange I can still open the tailgate with the battery disconnected providing I hold the key over while pulling the door.

Get in from work 4am

Soldering the wires is best and use heat shrink but the joints must be in the door and pillar not in the gaiter where they are subject to movement

Thanks to both Chris and Dave for your replies. It defies logic but no matter how I try, I cannot get the boot open despite using the key manually or holding it anti-clockwise, that only makes the front windows come down. Re the o/s/n rear door, handle is not floppy, but nothing happens when you pull it.

Have a feeling the main issue is the wiring but will struggle to access it with a locked boot. Thanks again for your help.

You can operate the boot lock manually, but you have to physically rotate the key beyond the normal unlock position. This requires a little effort and its possible that its stiff due to lack of use.

You can also access the door latch mechanism from inside the car (you'll have to oik the seats out of the way. I'm fairly sure you can can unlatch it using a screwdriver.
