Osiras Posted January 5, 2013 Report Posted January 5, 2013 Hey guys and girls. New to the forum and need some advice regarding my Galaxy. At least once every journey, I have a sudden loss of power, when I put my foot down nothing happens and it feels like the engine has no pull in it at all. If i pull over and turn the engine off and then back on, all is well for the rest of the journey. I've taken it to ford, they used their testing software and have said that there is a fault in the drivers door, specifically something to do with the ECU and the door.i realise that seems random. What's more frustrating is that they said that this fault is stopping their software see what the engine fault is. And to put the icing on the cake, ford have said that we must repair this fault at the cost of a £1000 before they can even look at the loss of power fault. what is going on? Quote
chrispb123456 Posted January 5, 2013 Report Posted January 5, 2013 Hi and welcome Sounds like you have an over boost or possibly underboost problem (same symptoms) that is reset by turning engine off and restarting, this could be sticking turbo vanes, turbo actuator, N75 valve, or faulty pipe work. You also have a fault on the diagnostics which is going to need sorting first, is there also a problem with the central locking? Do you know if the passenger side footwell has been wet in the past? Osiras Posted January 5, 2013 Author Report Posted January 5, 2013 Thank you for your quick reply, its appreciated. The passenger foot well hasn't been wet as far as I know. The door problem is "only" the door open warning light on the dash flashing on and off. So I'm sure you can understand why we wouldn't want to spend £1000 to get that fixed. When you say the turbo maybe over or under boosting. How would this be able to be fixed? I think the garage used some form of turbo cleaner? Quote
chrispb123456 Posted January 5, 2013 Report Posted January 5, 2013 Hi The reason I mentioned the floor is there is a bunch of wires on that side that powers the diagnostic socket and several other things. Finding the fault on diagnostics can be time consuming to find as you may need to disconnect each module in turn. Aftermarket radio's can also affect diagnostics Hopefully a wiring fault in the door to body gaiter or a door switch is causing the problem, but fault may be in the instrument cluster itself. Getting back to the boost issue using a turbo cleaner some members have reported good results albeit not that straight forward as the turbo needs to be blanked off temporarily, others myself included removed the turbo and cleaned all the soot and gunge. If you do a lot of town driving you should be giving it an Italian tune up regularly to avoid this happening. Definition of an Italian tune up if you don't know already. Uphill gradient 3rd gear full throttle 4000 RPM and hold it for as long as poss, (conditions permitting of course) and cam belt in good condition. Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 One problem which causes this symptom is the throttle sensor. If the system detects a small irregularity in the control voltage it shuts the engine down leaving at tickover slightly above normal. The slightly high tickover is the real clue as the fault code is not always reported. the throttle pedal can be removed with a small socket screwdriver and the cover for the control can also be removed once you have it out. Mine looked perfectly clean but I wiped the track with my thumb (A bit crude) and it's been fine since. I think the designers should be held to account for introducing a potentially fatal reaction to a minor fault but there we are. Remember that the clue is the slightly increased tickover until you switch off and reset the system. I have had this and similar problems and found that with care it is possible to switch the ignition off and on while still moving and in gear but there will no doubt be an outcry at this suggestion.
