Drivers Power Window Stopped Working ?

the other day i tried to put window down on my mk1 1998 1.9tdi manual, and nothing happened. I tried pressing the button for the window again and nothing. tried the passenger one that worked ok. tried drivers one again and nothing, although there was a slight hummmm and sort of click from behind the speedo clock assembly ( i assume its a relay for the windows). left it a while and it worked as normal. confused ?

 

ok back to today i tried pressing down button and nothing apart from the click/ humm when i press the button the light on the switch goes out, release and the light comes back on( i assume its drawing all the power) i have toady taken the switch out and checked there is power, which there IS to the switch, is this a common fault/ is it the switch or is there a modual that has given up ? help please?

Door gaiter wiring first thing to check, you may have chaffed bare and shorting wiring.
