Lloyd Evans Posted November 17, 2012 Report Posted November 17, 2012 Recently my mark 2 sharan tdi 115 has developed a loud wurring type noise, started with the engine running but now starts as soon as the key is turned one click. The noise sounds as if it is coming from the top of the engine under the black scuttle plate area possibly towards the drivers side. I have no idea what this could be so any ideas where to start would be great Thanks Quote
chromedome Posted November 17, 2012 Report Posted November 17, 2012 It sounds like the electric run on pump. It's main job is to prevent hot spots building up in the engine when the engine is stopped. On diesel models it is also associated with the auxiliary heater under the car. it is located right at the back of the engine compartment towards the right of centre. Unfortunately they go noisy when they are getting ready to fail and you won't get a lot of change out £100 for a new one. I think there is a FAQ on this forum where someone has managed to repair one. SilverBeast Posted November 17, 2012 Report Posted November 17, 2012 This pump is visible behind the diesel filter above the engine and below the black scuttle plate, pretty central but more towards the passenger side if anything. I believe on the 115's it runs for a couple of minutes after the ignition is turned off too. On my 130 it stops when the ignition is turned off. You can replace the motor brushes on the Run On Pump, though the motor hasn't been designed for you to do this. There are instructions in the FAQ's on this site and others. I've done mine. Quote
