Hope someone can help. My 2010 Galaxy (163) Titanium Diesel has a tapping/clicking sound when the engine gets hot and the radiator cooling fan is going. The tapping noise increases in frequency as the engine revs are raised. Also noticed a burning rubber smell at the same time. It went to our local Ford dealer, but they couldn't replicate.

 

Anyone had similar probs?

First thing springs to mind - does the noise stop if you disconnect the fan? Edited by acecard

Thanks for your reply...I haven't tried disconnecting fan, since car is still under warranty. However, when the fan stops, then noise does seem to go away. Thanks Ian

Hi, I have a 2003 Ford Galaxy Diesel. I am not sure if I have a similar problem... However I know nothing about cars so please bare with me!

 

I had loads of smoke coming from infront of the rear wheels. Intermitent, but told by garage it was the heat exchanger and a common problem. So first we replace a "glow plug"(?) - the problem got SIGNIFANTLY worse. So then we replaced the heat exchanger (at great expense).

 

Anyway, although the smoking has now stopped, I now have a ticking noise and a high pitch fan noise coming from the engine, and the heat exchanger unit itself sounds like an aeroplane taking off. It is pretty loud, and you can hear it from inside the car when idle.

 

This is intermitent and appears to happen when the car is either warming up - after 1 mile of driving, and I have just now discovered, poss when it is cooling down - I have just done 2 hr motorway drive and when I turned the engine off the car sounded like an aeroplane about to take off. (unfortunately I didn't look at the temp guage, but when I looked during journey it was about half way, there were no warning lights on dash though). The aeroplane noise from infront of the pass rear wheel continues even when the engine is turned off - for about 30 secs - 1minute, but stops suddenly. It is like it is turned off rather than dies down. A high pitch whir was coming from the engine during the last leg of my journey, and I assume the heat exchanger was prob going too, but driving too fast to notice.

 

Garage insist they have done everything right and don't think their work could have caused these additional faults. And ofcourse as intermittent never happens when they look. They haven't a clue. But as far as I can see they changed a part that is now making lots of noise and I have extra noises from behind the dash (passenger side), I'm not blaming them, but they seem nervous about doing anything more (understandable I guess).

 

Any thoughts, or are the noises what a heat exchanger is meant to make! (bearing in mind the old one was broken!)

 

I have only had the car 17 months.

welcome to the forum alkers,whereabouts are you in the south?

i sold my galaxy about 17 mths back wonder if it was my old 1?

 

the jet engine noise you hear is the rear booster heater working AS IT SHOULD,there is an abunance of info on the forum about this far too much for me to give info on.

as yours is a mk2 then iirc the heater will start when the temp is 10-12 degrees or below,and helps the engine warm up quickly.

as said sounds like ALL IS WELL.

So you think this is all well - even the noises from the engine? I was just reading another posting about a high whirring noises coming from the engine and a reply stated:

 

It sounds like the electric run on pump. It's main job is to prevent hot spots building up in the engine when the engine is stopped. On diesel models it is also associated with the auxiliary heater under the car. it is located right at the back of the engine compartment towards the right of centre. Unfortunately they go noisy when they are getting ready to fail

well i pxed mine to a private dealer in brighton so,does yours start lf03*** ?

 

take a look in the faqs and have a read up on run on pump,on mine you could hear it and then you couldnt i followed the instruction in the faqs and carried out repairs once done i could hear it again.your find all info in the faqs found in the tech section of the forum.

Well, this is a great relief. I spent hundreds having this repaired, and was so worried it had lead to even more repairs - like the car I finally got rid of 17 months ago! I love the galaxy, so nice to drive despite the size, and surprisingly easy to park.

 

Thanks so much for your help, however I hope not to be back on this technical forum again too soon!!!! CAn;t afford more repairs just yet, and unfortunately me or my husband are not DIY'ers.

 

'Fraid your not part of my Galaxy's family tree - mine starts EK52! It would have been freaky if it was though. :glare:

Yeah, you miss the ticking and the jet engine when its broke - like mine :glare:

 

Yeah, you also miss the 500quid it costs to get a new part from Ford! My garage said they couldn't get a replica part - wonder if they tried VW....

Luckily they fitted the part for free as the glow plug hadn't fixed the prob - so at least I saved on labour.

Hello again, sorry to bring up the subject, but I am still unhappy with my heat exchanger.

 

OK, so I have come to terms with the ticking and the jet engine noise. However, there is a a lot of exhaust coming from the unit. It smells too.

 

I have driven about 200miles since having the new unit fitted, about 80 of those on a motorway. SO I think I have blasted out any of the new unit smells.

 

Now it smells very exhausty. I even get a strong whiff when I get out of the drivers door. Although I can't see it, it leaves a horrible taste in the back of my throat for ages. Sometimes I can see it if I look at the heat exchanger, it just looks like dirty exhaust fumes.

 

I am wondering if this is normal - it doesn't seem very healthy to me. Is there any risk that this could be going inside my vehicle when I have the heaters on.

 

Should I get the garage to do an emissions test on the new unit, and / or maybe an internal fumes check? Or from reading the forum I notice reference to pumps - could this be faulty? (although today I can't seem to find a forum search function!)

 

The Galaxy is a family car and I don't want to be gassing out my kids!
