Caff Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 I need some advice pleaseJust got my Gal mk 2 back from an MOT and, though I've never encountered this before, she now vibrates gently (as if driving on a mild rumble strip) when turning left at low speeds, eg in car parks. Turning right doesn't show this up and also driving at normal speeds - I suppose the sensation might be masked. I can't hear any dodgy noisesI'm taking it back to the MOT chap as he seems very approachable but I'd like to know what he might have done to give this problem.I've tried to search the forum and Google but am obviously asking the wrong thing. Thanks in advanceCath Quote
derekod Posted September 29, 2012 Report Posted September 29, 2012 Is the vibration just through the steering wheel or the felt through whole car? I had a similar situation with mine when I replaced the inner drive boot as I had the front of the car up on axle stands, when I completed the job and took it for a test drive it felt similar and got worse when I turned the steering wheel slightly. I could only presume with mine that it must have been some wear and tear within the drives as they were sitting at a different angle jacked up, once I drove in a figure 8 a couple of times with a complete lock f the steering wheel it appeared to settle down. Let me know how you get on. Quote
Caff Posted September 29, 2012 Author Report Posted September 29, 2012 Mine hasn't settled, but thanks. The MOT chap had a good look and a quick drive. He reckons the problem is the power steering pump. He tells me that as it is very mild I can continue to drive it. Looks like it's a case of wear and tear and bad timing. The gal has done over 100k so this might be right. I shall be changing the pump in the near future though as I find it a bit disconcerting and I've seen some reconditioned pumps on eBay. He said he's seen much worse and not to panic. Quote
chrispb123456 Posted September 30, 2012 Report Posted September 30, 2012 You may also have a seized alternator clutch pulley, you can test this without removing anything.Through the slots in the alternator locate the fan blades, with a screwdriver you should be able to turn the blades fairly easy in a clockwise direction but not anticlockwise (viewed from pulley) if you cant move them either way the pulley has seized. Caff Posted September 30, 2012 Author Report Posted September 30, 2012 Yes thanks. We'd checked for this and so did the MOT chap without being prompted. The vibration happens at right turns too I notice but not as much I think. The steering pump is on my "to do" list when I feel moneyed Quote
