derekod Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 Has anybody got any pictures up or a video of replacing the timing belt on a 2002 AUY engine, I would like to see how tight the clearance is once the engine mount and timing belt covers are removed. I know that there are videos on youtube, but they are usually of a passat or a removed engine. Quote
chrispb123456 Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 Cant help with a video but access is pretty good on this model once the said parts are removed, have changed several belt kits on the galaxy no problem. You will also need to remove the under tray and o/s wheel to access the crank pulley and lower cover. Rockabill Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 Just asemblying the engine mount after replacing the water pump. First time I've taken off (on the driveway) a cam belt and agree with chrispb, the access is reasonable to change the belt, pump, tensioner. The most difficult parts to access I found were the 4 bolts which secure the crankshaft pulley (I again agree with chrispb, removal of the wheel would make access easier, Haynes Manual does not mention this and I didn't but if I had to do this job again I would defiantly remove the wheel) and the bolts at the back of the engine mount bracket attached to the engine. Access to these is not great and I wonder if anyone has ever managed to put a torque wrench on these without dropping the engine out! Quote
derekod Posted September 18, 2012 Author Report Posted September 18, 2012 I have just been looking at timing belt tools from sealey VSE5951and VS4840 I dont think there is much between them. Are they just different quality as the VSE5951 can be purchased for half the price of the VS4840? I know I have the option of buying the VSE2356 but I have not come accross a supplier that sells both that and the tensioner adjuster 303-1053 Quote
derekod Posted September 18, 2012 Author Report Posted September 18, 2012 I am not sure if it is ok to ask this here on the forum but has anybody purchased from http://www.superpowertools.co.uk and is it a legit site.As they have a good price on the VSE5951 Timing Tool Kit. Quote
derekod Posted September 24, 2012 Author Report Posted September 24, 2012 I just purchased the timing belt tools and weather permitting I will do this tomorrow as I will be out in the open. As a guideline what is the actual book time allowed to replace the water pump? I know it will take me longer as I will be doing it with the car jacked up! I read on another forum that the sump is weak on these but I imagine I should be ok once it is fully supported with a block of timber. Anything to watch out for? Quote
derekod Posted September 27, 2012 Author Report Posted September 27, 2012 Finally got around to replacing the Timing Belt, Tensioner and Water Pump today, thought I was going to run into trouble though as the four pulley studs did not want to come out to handy and stripped the hex head on two of them, had to beat in a splined socket which shifted them in the end. Going to order up four new studs, the hydraulic tensioner also turned out to be a bit of a pain as it was not compressing to easy when I was winding back the tensioner with the recommended tool had to use the hex socket to ease it back, got it set up in the end with the 4mm gap. Next job to tackle now is the half shaft and hub which I have previously replaced, obviously a poor design. How well do those polish modified half shafts stand up? I am contemplating getting one of these this time around. Quote
