Just wondered if anyone could give me a ball park figer!!

 

I have just been under the car to look at something else and found rust between the out rigger and chassis at the front of the car drivers side prodded a little bit ... Finger went through out rigger weld ( wish I hadn't done that now!!) from what I can tell the rust has made a hole about the size of a 50p everything else looks really solid!

 

Is the repair just a plate over the hole? And how much will I be looking at??

I had the same issue on my mk2 this year - I had it welded and also the plates that the front suspension is bolted to were looking dodgy so they were patched and welded also. Strangely there isn't any rust anywhere else.

Spent last 2 days undoing the damage that Hayselden Doncaster did to my car, unrolling bent sills - what a mess. Took the opportunity to tidy the rust thats appearing betwwen sills and wings.

 

I knew there had been some rust on the o/s out rigger, which I thought I addressed a couple of years ago with copious Hammerite - what a waste of time - it's rubbish! So peeling back the stone chip because of telltale rusty mark and after a poke revealed this!

Presumably this would be an MOT fail, is it easy to have this fixed?

 

The inside of the outrigger is full of mud and shit and the outrigger hasnt been welded squarely onto the hanging plate (unless some dealer has torn the outrigger away from it - anything is possible with dealers). All in all, bitterly disappointed - this might have been addressed under the corrosion warranty had I bothered to check thoroughly - although IIRC it was only 6 years.

I think my man would fail that, should be a straightforward job to patch it though, and should look neat once it's blacked. The rot probably goes under the reinforcing plate, so that may have to come off and be remade.

 

The days of cheap welding at garages are gone though, find a mate with a mig if you want it fixed for a few beers.

 

The only thing that will slow down rot under there is waxoyl where you can't get, and good underseal on external surfaces.

I asked trusted independent that does my MOT's - he recomended his local guy Alan https://plus.google.com/116376877323365791289/about?gl=uk&hl=en

 

Alan took it back to clean metal - he said its condition was good - the underseal had stopped the rot from spreading beyond what I'd poked out, and he made a nice u channel piece and did a smashing welding job plus underseal. Very good price too. Highly recommended.

 

He left me a hole to access the inside of the box section - I'll give it a week or so and wax the inside and re-schutz the outside.

Cars don't seem to suffer with rot like they used to, it's a shame to see otherwise good cars scrapped for the want of a bit of welding.
