Tarka03 Posted September 9, 2012 Report Posted September 9, 2012 Hi folks my power steering makes the most horrible noise on lock but the belt is not screeching any ideas as to what may cause thisThanks Quote
gregers Posted September 9, 2012 Report Posted September 9, 2012 are you sure its the power steering and not the alternator pully/tensioner?sounds like metallic twitering. Quote
seatkid Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 On full lock, the power steering dump valves operate due to excess pressure. This is loud but I wouldnt describe it as "most horrible". You're not supposed to hold the steering on full lock for more than about 10 seconds as it could lead to temporary loss of power assistance. chrispb123456 Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 Low fluid level can also cause unusual noises, if it is low then you probably have a leak which would need investigating. Quote
Tarka03 Posted September 11, 2012 Author Report Posted September 11, 2012 Thanks to you all just had it looked at the garage said it seems to be a problem with the engine revs on lock the revs drop off and causes a rattle in the power steering? never heard of that before any ideas Quote
chrispb123456 Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 Problems with steering gear and pumps are not that common, it's more often than not a seized alternator clutch pulley and possibly auxiliary belt tensioner as already mentioned. This is assuming you have a MK2 2000 onwards as some earlier models have a solid pulley Quote
