I have had the alternator pulley replaced to try and stop the aux belt chattering when cold. The garage I use, good guy, said it may be the bottom pulley giving the problem. Is the bottom pulley a clutch type or do I have problems else where. Thanks for any replies.

Check the plastic idler on the tensioner, mine was wrecked by the time I changed the alternator pulley.

While your there check the water pump pulley runs true

I know it's a separate belt but they can screech and chatter before any signs of leakage

check this thread out,

http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.php?/topic/11428-alternator-workshop-error-noisy-at-idle/page__st__45

on page 4 adrianf mentions using either a 17 or 19mm spanner to release the tension on the unit,i knew these intructions were around as i followed them when i done mine.

within the thread it will tell you the method on how to change the tensioner.

when i done mine i bought the pully from gsf and the tensioner from vw as it was cheaper but that was for my old mk2 tdi.
