The pipe (braided) has a groove worn into it and needs replacing and it would be nice to know what I'm going to be covered in if I remove it.

Any help would be gratefully received.

The metal can is your Diesel(?) filter. I guess the sensor could be a Fuel Pressure/Temperature sensor.

It would help if you add your vehicle details to your signature. There is a sticky thread that tells you how to do this.

As said by silverbeast the sensor arrowed is the fuel temperature sensor and the fuel filter.

The coolant temperature sensor is on the rear bulkhead side, impossible to see it without removing the fuel filter, this will give you room to get your hand down there it's held in with a horseshoe clip, they are colour coded so if your replacing it make sure its the same, you will lose a small amount of coolant when removed.

Tip.

When removing fuel filter leave the two pipes connected to the plastic connector (T piece) just pull off the wire clip and pull off the T piece from the filter then remove the other two pipes, the filter can now be removed with the bracket by pushing in the button at the rear of the bracket and slide upwards.

Thanks for this. Found the the coolant sensor and changed it. VW Garage just down the road and they had the right one at £37 odd. Removed the large pipe and fuel filter and pushed the horeshoe clip down and removed it easy enough by hand. Getting it all back together again was a bit more difficult. Found that the clip has to fitted at the bottom of the sensor and not the top as it leaked straightaway. Tied a bit of nylon cord to the clip so I could retrieve it from the depths if the inevitable happened. Had to push in the sensor and fit the clip with one hand. Usual cuts and bruises but it did the job. MPG a shade up and no revving on startup. Good job. Also tried the 10K boost service spray. Surprised but it does seem to work. Bit puzzled though as the expected clouds of crap coming out of the exhaust failed to materialise but car runs better after it without doubt.
