mrben Posted June 7, 2012 Report Posted June 7, 2012 Just wondering what the mail difference's are, as sheran's seem to be a lot more expensive... Quote
bfc1001 Posted June 7, 2012 Report Posted June 7, 2012 there s no difference really , only trim and body panels. i think the 2.3 engine is exclusive to the ford range and the galaxy auto box is made by ford but everything else is pretty much vw parts. Quote
mrben Posted June 7, 2012 Author Report Posted June 7, 2012 Hello. I believe all the box's are ford on the galaxy, are they VW box's on the VW's? i was wondering if the wiring was different at all, as the galaxy's seem to have lots of silly faults with wires breaking in the door pillars and boot hinge's. seatkid Posted June 7, 2012 Report Posted June 7, 2012 (edited) VW/SEAT/Ford are all VW engines except for Ford models with 4 cyl petrol engines which are 2 Ford petrol engines (2.0L and 2.3L), VW/SEAT used a 2.0L petrol engine. ALL Mk1 ( -late 1999) All models use the Ford 5 speed manual gearbox or 5 speed Japanese Jatco Autobox. ALL Mk2 (2000- ) cars have VW 6speed manual gearbox or 6 speed Japanese JATCO autobox. Lots and lots of wiring loom differences, depending on engine/gearbox/aircon/spec variations. All cars were made on the same production line in Palmela, Portugal with common suppliers, some Ford designed parts, some VAG parts , Mk2 predominantly VAG as Ford had lost interest by then and wanted out, but were tied in by contract. For anyone thinking that "Japanese" = reliable, it is not the case here. THe JATCO boxes are just too underated for the Shalaxy and as such break/wear out easily especially those pulling caravans. The most reliable gearbox appears to be the 5 speed manual Ford box fitted to all manual Mk1's. Edited June 7, 2012 by seatkid Quote
chrispb123456 Posted June 7, 2012 Report Posted June 7, 2012 The five speed auto box in the MK2's is actually Japanese.Jatco JF506E is used on a variety of today's vehicles see link below. http://www.automaticchoice.com/Catalogue/jf506e.pdf Quote
seatkid Posted June 7, 2012 Report Posted June 7, 2012 Bugger you beat me to it SeatkidShaken up by the poster who complained that no one answered his question maybe... :40: Now that you mention it maybe the Mk1 autos are 4 speed and Mk2 autos 5 speed :) Quote

mrben Posted August 8, 2012 Author Report Posted August 8, 2012 Hello again. So if push came to shuv, which mk galaxy would you say is the better? (reliability, performance etc.) Also, why are the sherans and alhambra's of same year more expensive? Thanks. Quote
Saif Rehman Posted August 8, 2012 Report Posted August 8, 2012 Hello again. So if push came to shuv, which mk galaxy would you say is the better? (reliability, performance etc.) Also, why are the sherans and alhambra's of same year more expensive? Thanks. My opinion is that the mk2 Ford Galaxy 1.9tdi is better because as mentioned by yourself, its cheaper. I think this is because of the make of car and trim levels as i am sure the alhambra has more gadgets and gizmos as standard compared to the Ford. VW - i again thik this is due to the VW image. I personally have the 1.9tdi Zetec 115bhp model, which i am more than happy with. When the time comes to change, again i will be looking for the last of the mk2's (upto 2006) but maybe the 130/150bhp. Quote
mrben Posted August 11, 2012 Author Report Posted August 11, 2012 ok thanks for that, great info... I'm well chuffed with my mk1, but it is (they are) getting old now, and there is a few squeaks coming from the engine area, one i know is an ongoing aux.belt sqreech when under load which i can't seem to get rid off (new belt and tensioner), and there is knocks from the front suspension area/s...but i like it and it tows well.
