sounds like an earth wire the starter itself .If the car has no under tray the water splashes on it causing it to become weak over a few days.

Its nothing to do with PATS or key. If your car has been slow turning over and now wont turn over at all, check your battery first (its duff or flat due to a charging fault) and then your starter motor.

I know this sounds really obvious but just to help the experts have you ruled out flat/duff battery? When you try to start it, do the dash lights go dim(I'm assuming that the car will try to start with a very low battery, but it may be that it recognises that and won't try at very low voltages...), any clicks when you turn the key etc etc.

It might help if you could post some more info such as what model you have, year, manual or auto, anything you've done to try to solve it so far.

Good luck!

you havnt changed the batteries in the key recently have you???

if so youve lost the pats chip.

-_- Well I think you could be wasting your money......IIRC you dont need PATS to turn the car over, the PATS just inhibits the ECU ignition/fuelling. And PATS is not known to lose coding.

Have you checked your engine battery with a voltmeter?? (the big one in the engine bay - not the key!!). It could also be the starter motor solenoid, wiring to the starter motor, or the ignition key switch.

If it's a PATS issue, you'll get a flashing door LED, and you'd still be able to crank the engine on the starter, it just won't fire up. Have you got 2 keys?

Lazy followed by non-starting could be, in the order I'd check...

Will the car bump start? assuming it's not auto. Will it jump start?

Then check..

Battery & cables including battery junction box.

Starter motor, solenoid & cables.

Alternator, make sure it's charging, obviously you''d need to get started first.

All the above can be easily checked with a multimeter very easily.

Then I'd check the ign barrel & induction loop

I'm personally suspicious of mechanic friends that don't check the easiest options first. Like the one up the road that changed most of his A6 n/s/f suspension inc c/v & shaft, till I noticed one of his 'new' alloys wasn't quite round. I don't know your mechanic friend or his competency but I'd be checking the above before fiddling & hoping with the PATS and possibly turning the original problem into a £££dealer£££ only problem.
