Hi,

I have got a problem y reg galaxy with the 1.9 diesel AUY engine.

We just changed the turbo as the arm was sticking. This corrected the original fault which I believe is quite common.

The problem we have now is a lack of power until the turbo comes in? I would almost say it is dangerous, pulling out of junctions etc?

We have changed the 2 vacum solenoids on the bulkhead but no improvement. I have also plugged it in with no faults codes showing up?

Has anyone else encountered this problem please?

thanks Barry

Hi. I'm a newbie and haven't experienced this personally but it sounds rather like the problem HARPSTER has just posted a solution for - ie mis-adjusted actuator rod on a new turbo (think they're supposed to be factory set but...). You mentioned checking fault codes - if you've got vagcom/vcds then it might be helpful to log the 2000-4000 rpm figures for rpm, boost, maf, egr (requested and actual) - even I found it really helpful just getting started- , and the experts here can interpret them - well - expertly.

If it is the actuator you might be familiar with the basic diagnostic from when your original turbo failed, but if not there's lots of info on the forums about checking (from the simple suck on the hose and see what happens) and setting it up correctly. From the sounds of it, you've done the vacuum hose routing/failure checks which I'd guess are the simplest cause of turbo performance issues after a new install. Last thought, and I don't know if it even applies to your engine/my, but I found the ecu hose off after I'd been pulling things under the bonnet trying to sort out why it was in limp mode when I bought it. Supposedly intermittent limp... Of course, I might be completely off-base with all of this as practically all my tdi knowledge is theory atm - that's why I'm haunting these forums... Good luck!

Hi,

thanks for the replies.

I have had the vehicle on the ramp today and looked at the turbo actuator rod. When the vehichle starts it is sucked in at tickover. When we the rev the vehicle it moves slightly as you release the throttle.

I had an 05 touran in today with the same engine, slightly diferent turbo set up. When watching the rod on this vehicle it did the same, hopefully ruling out a vacum problem?

The touran would rev free from 900 rpm with what sounds like the turbo kicking in straight away. The galaxy is pretty non reponsive and sounds laboured until around 1900 rpm when the turbo kicks in?

many thanks Barry

IIRC For AUY (110bhp variable vane turbo) this sounds right. At low revs max vacuum is applied to move the actuator to max boost position.

First check the boost pipework and intercooler for leaks (holes/splits or more likely bad joints with damaged or missing O rings), particularly those pipes that were removed during the turbo change. You should be able to hear or feel any boost leakage.

I have read adjustment is possible on the actuator rod, it may be that its not going far enough to the boost side, also check the vacuum thingy that moves the actuactor is correctly assaembled/mounted, it may be too far back not allowing the rod to the full on position.

Hi,

I changed the MAF sensor yesterday. Running perfect now. Just my luck for it to play up at the same time as changing the turbo.

Thanks for the replies Barry
