I am sure the super fast mechanics can do it an hour or so, when I did mine it took me a day from start to finish, with many tea breaks. You might as well do the timing belt, tensioner and water pump in one go. I got the set off ebay which was very reasonable. The TIS (again CD off ebay) has an excellent set of instructions. The only bit I found a bit tricky was understand the timing set up, but once you do it it is far easier than it sounds. I also bought the Sealey tool kit VSE5951 which cost about £70 but you can do it without it. Edited by qswi271

now if you read up you find that you have to take the cambelt off to change water pump, whats the point of asking then when you get the info you moan the answers wrong. you must be the biggest waster on here, if i was a mod id have barred you by now for asking so many daft questions, buy a book or download one for free if you can fathom out how to do it without asking about that as well heres a clue

you reckon give it a go then and make yourself out a diy mechanic as the belt runs across the water pump so impossible to remove pump, if your so sure why the hell you ask then tell people there wrong. im going to slag you off as much as i can as you deffo are the most moronic person on here. 99% of your posts ask for help.

to be honest mods ban this idiot and his ip to let proper posts be answered

any body out there want there input here if it can be done with belt in place on a non pd engine of 1z mark

Not meaning to add fuel to the fire but I managed to change my mk1 tdi water pump without touching the cambelt. The whole water pump is bolted to the side of the block. If you only remove the front of the water pump then yes you would have to remove the cambelt as the bolts that hold the pump together are behind the crank cambelt pulley. If I remember I had to remove the alternator and place the air con compressor and power steering pump out of the way. It was a bit of a job, not hard, just a a sod to get at. Get a Haynes manual for the MK1, very useful.

I remember how it's done now. There is a bracket bolted over the water pump that holds the steering pump and air con compressor. I think there is 3 or 4 nuts that hold the bracket. When the bracket is removed you will see the bolts that hold the water pump in place, they face out towards the front of the car.

There is no need whatsoever to go near the timing belt, it won't get harmed or even touched.
