I have a problem with my car making a strange noise and I've decided to swap the auxiliary belt. Can anyone tell me how easy this is - do I need to slacken off the tensioner in any way or is there any clever technique for the job?

Does anyone know the approx cost for the belt?

Thanks

Hi,

Presume you have the Mk2.

Very simple (like many things when you know how). Slide a large screwdriver under the tensioning roller, lever it up until you can slide a small screwdriver / 3mm Hex Allen key or similar through a hole in the tensioner casting (from the airbox side). This screwdriver then prevents the tensioner from acting. Undo the 3 bolts holding the tensioner and remove it: the aux belt can then be removed. A new one can be threaded back from the top without undoing anything else.

Hope this helps.

there is a square section bullt into the tensioner body, use a 19 mm open ended spanner on this ,to release the tension on the belt .then lock in place with an allen key.this will save any damage using a screw driver, also if its your first time, draw a plan of the routeing, could save scratching your head later.......
