Rear Brake Piston

i am replacing rear brake pads, the piston obviously has to be retracted to enable space for new pads,what's the trick? i have tried screwing them in, tried applying pressure with the aid of a big screwdriver!! all to no avail. HELP.

There's a proper tool available for winding in the rear calipers available from most factors, have done this with a G clamp to push cylinder and a pipe wrench to turn piston clockwise but fiddly, iirc the tool made by laser is about

With the correct tool its easy peasy, without it, its just about impossible - I tried and tried and only ended up damaging the rubber boot :rolleyes: and I'm in the top team for wanting to save money....

Don't forget to release the excess brake fluid through the bleed nipple and not back into the system. This has been known to damage the ABS and master cylinder.

Several suppliers make cheap wind back tools now, you can pick them up for around ten quid, including on fleabay.

 

It can be done without, I used a piece of square keysteel and a g-clamp before, but it's fiddly. The tool is worth every penny.

I did mine yesterday for the second time with new discs. try winding out first and then back in and it should not be a problem
