Verbal Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 Hi, I have a 1.9tdi 52 plate galaxy ghia. Its the 6 speed model with the AUY engine code. For a while now we have known the flywheel was on its last legs, with the doors wobbling on there hinges and depressing the clutch solving the vibration. Well last week we started having problems getting gear and it finally gave up the ghost completely. It appears the clutch has gone, as it does not bite at all, but the gearbox is still free (you can select all gears but not engage them) and the clutch is now soft. The flywheel is also still juddering away. Now what is likely to have brocken and what do I replace? Is it the clutch plates gone, caused by the faulty flywheel? Gearbox? I'm also on the lookout for good parts suppliers for anything I'll need. Also depending what is wrong, are there any other associated parts that would be replaced at the same time? Cheers, Andy. Bigjeeze Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 I replaced my clutch @ 138K. I changed everything , the driven plate, the pressure plate and the flywheel. I wasn't sure that the flywheel was knackered but as no one could tell me that it was OK I decided to change it anyway. That was 2 years ago - It cost around Quote
Verbal Posted February 11, 2012 Author Report Posted February 11, 2012 Bit of a bump on this one. I have the clutch & flywheel now and went out to the car for the first time since I towed it home. The clutch still feels fine, but is not selecting, does that mean its more than likely the cable has come off or snapped bolt? and if so how are they to fix. Its getting the flywheel & clutch fitted on Monday, but I'll need to acquire any other parts I need quickly, before my mates boss comes back and wonders why car is on his ramp! Also is it a no brainer to change the gearbox oil whilst doing the clutch and flywheel? and any other parts needed other than the sachs dualmass flywheel, clutch & hydraulic bearing thing? Bigjeeze Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 There is no cable for the clutch it is hydraulic. There is a gear selector cable but this is virtually unknown to have faultson the MK2. I can't think of any other parts you will need to change apart from those mentioned. As I said it is a very heavy gearbox. You can change the gearbox oil at the same time - but it is a sealed unit and should last at least 100k before needing a change. I haven't chnaged mine at 180k as yet and still going strong. ( Perhaps I shouldn'nt have said that!!). Quote
MadBaz Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 I'd do the release bearing as well for the sake of Quote

Hi Andy, Just wondering how it went? I've had a rattling clutch / flywheel then total loss of drive; you mentioned that the clutch didn't bite at all, I assume that was a loss of drive? My gearbox is out and I was either going to strip it or take it to have it looked at - but the flywheel and pressure plate are maybe marked as if the clutch had let go? I'd be interested to know if your issue was fixed by just changing the clutch/flywheel. Cheers, Graham Quote
