Hi all, I am a new member and this is my first post, I have a 2003 ford galaxy 1.9 TDI LX, I have only just brought the car and I am experiencing the following problems, sometimes it is hard to select and de select first and reverse gears, also I am not sure if it is connected but if you press the brake pedal whilst stationary it appears to keep traveling slightly, I have just had brake and clutch fluid replaced and was hoping it would solve the problem, alas it hasn't.

It would be appreciated for anyone's help on this post, thanks in advance.

sounds like your gear selector cables may need adjustment if its just those two gears you are finding stiff, as for the brake pedal, my vw sharan used to do that until eventually it would be on the floor - turned out to need replacement master cylinder as the piston had worn.

i think the cables for the gear change are adjusted at the gearbox end iirc, but try a search in the techincal section faqs, there maybe a post on this already.

how many miles has the car covered out of interest?

if the pedal is hesitant to return to the top it may instead be a problem with the hydraulic clutch, this can be bled to eliminate the possibility of this, (unless the slave cylinder in the gearbox is faulty in which case bleeding wont cure the problem,) but this must be done correctly - its not quite as straightforward as bleeding brakes so i was told though i have not done one myself, again, there may be some help in one of the forums if you try a search.

the clutch mechanism itself may be worn, at 93000 miles, either of these items, or the gearchange linkage could be equally possible. did you buy privately or from a dealer? if you have bought from a dealer and have a warranty it would be worth checking out if you can get this issue checked/remedied under the warranty.

i would suggest the likely scenario from what you have said is that during the fluid change you had done, some air has got into the line supplying the hydraulic clutch so i would recommend bleeding that first as its the easiest/cheapest possible fix!

I brought the car from a local dealer, small outfit and he said he was worried about my trade in car so he wrote trade sale on the paperwork indemnifying my warranty. Looks like I may have been had by the sound of things but I will try and get the things you said looked at.

Trade sale is absolute b*ll*cks and ILLEGAL, I've had this tried on me over a cracked weld on a clutch pedal (focus) dealer sorted it sharpish after just one phone call. The fact trade sale is written on receipt has him bang to rights, I'd expect the problem putting right , refund for bleeding and a goodwill gesture.

as mad baz has said totally garbage, iirc under the sale of goods act you have 28 days to notify the dealer of any faults.

what you do have to do is allow them to make any repairs to it before you can try rejection of car.

do not hesitate over this, contact consumer direct asap, ive been down this route with a dealer about 5 years ago

they are a very helpful bunch.

Cant do that by law. You still have a warranty by law if he is a trader.

Not being able to select gear when engine running and can do when engine off indicates clutch is not fully disengaging. Last thread I remember reading with this problem had a partly broken clutch release arm mount inside the bell housing. Do a search, its here somewhere.
