Davehillbo Posted November 18, 2011 Author Report Posted November 18, 2011 Oh , garage tried to get it fitted, they said its badly corroded, is it worth putting in a glowplug? The unit seems to work but pumps out white smoke. Is there any damage I could do? Quote
marinabrid Posted November 18, 2011 Report Posted November 18, 2011 they do corrode badly around the bolts that fasten the heater together, i got new ones from vw dealer as the old ones had to be cut out, its worth doing but time consuming and a garage may charge a lot to do it, but a glowplug will probly cure your common problem, i think you can get the bolts from eberspacher dealers as well by post. The unit seems to drop ok, the garage sprayed the bolts and they came free. This is probably a long shot but does anyone live near the Burnley area thats done this before come and fit it for me? Will obviously pay for their time , i dont know if im experienced enough to do it. David. Quote
chrispb123456 Posted November 18, 2011 Report Posted November 18, 2011 Hi thereIm not in your area but would be willing to strip your heater clean combustion chamber and fit a new plug and gauze to your heater for Quote
swifty Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 Hi All the problem I have is the aux heater has been working over the past few weeks even in the warm weather but then would not shut off unless I switched the engine off (faulty sensor?) now the heater wont come on at all and I cant get vag-com to connect to the heater module, all other modules are fine just wondering what to check for? The glowplug is only just over a year old. Swifty. Quote
chrispb123456 Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 If you cant connect with the heater check fuse 12 first if it's OK look at the wiring multiplug on the heater and see if the large red wire has corroded/broken off, if it has broken off the easiest fix is to bypass the multiplug in other words connect the two red wires together outside the plug. Quote
swifty Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 Many thanks Chrispb123456 fuse is good checked the other day. looks like Ill be getting under the car then  Quote
Davehillbo Posted November 22, 2011 Author Report Posted November 22, 2011 Many thanks Chrispb123456 fuse is good checked the other day. looks like Ill be getting under the car then  Many thanks for the offer Chris, but ive had a look at the pics the mechanic took and its really crusty lol, so ive bought a mk2 aux heater off ebay. Now the question is, how hard is it to swap over, or is it a mechanic job? chrispb123456 Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Doing a straight swop takes me 40 mins including jacking up rear end, no special tools required if it's a secondhand heater you got was it gauranteed a working unit. Quote

It was sold as fully working, so i would assume so , what do I need to do with the pipes, i guess you need to crimp them or something to stop leakage? lol Quote
chrispb123456 Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 Lets hope so then, personally I flush out and refill with new anti freeze, if not then yes you would need to clamp the pipes. Before you remove the coolant hoses make a mental note, sketch or photo of the angle the pipes are fitted to the heater as this could cause problems when refitting heater back in car. bigdave982 Posted November 26, 2011 Report Posted November 26, 2011 (edited) Hi guys ,having spent a cold hour or so removing the heater I found that my glowplug is not like the ones in the piccies! rathe rthan having a nut to remove it has two wires ,black and white on it.These seem to be permanantly attached to the wiring loom inside the unit, and part of the plug so cant see how to remove it. It is possible to remove the plug but this twists the wires badly , any ideas??got the plug from gsf thurrock(evenually had to try 3 part numbers that can be found on this site, the beru one being the winner,£25 and change)Hope someone can help or its gonna be a long cold winter ) Edited November 26, 2011 by bigdave982 Quote
chrispb123456 Posted November 26, 2011 Report Posted November 26, 2011 Hi Dave You now have a problem the plug with the wires attached is the later ceramic plug over double the price of the earlier one, you can use the earlier plug but you need the earlier plug loom to be able to attach the wires to the glowplug, if your interested I have a new ceramic plug here which you can have for what I paid for it Quote

Yes ,had scanned with vcds lite ,got a flameout code ,(wrote it down but cant find it now)bought new glowplug as recommended on here and stripped it out. Found the old glowplug was different, managed to get it unscrewed to confirm that it was different (was hoping it was a pushon cap or something rather than a nut and washer).Obviously cant change glowplug as its different ,so i have to put it all back together ,thought sod it and cleared the code agian ,went to bluewater and as previously reported its fired up and burnt my finger ! Im wondering if it was just a loose connection ,though everything seemd tight and as it should be Edited November 26, 2011 by bigdave982 Quote
chrispb123456 Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 Usually when a glow plug is completly knackered it will show open circuit or short to +, flame out is more common with fuel supply interupted IE, low on fuel and facing downhill causes air to be drawn in.Single incidences can go unnoticed and the heater will retry to start again after a few minutes if the car is moved and/or tank replenished, but 5 simultanious flame outs will cause the heater to lock out this is whats probably happened to yours. Davehillbo Posted November 30, 2011 Author Report Posted November 30, 2011 Ok, just tried to VCDS into the aux heater, but no response, can you talk to the heater on a mk1 galaxy? (its a mk1 with mk2 electrics). Quote
chrispb123456 Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 The Mk1 is not wired for diagnostics on the booster heater, so if your "new" MK 2 heater needs codes clearing you cant do it Quote
