Hi all,

I've got a MK1 Ghia X TDi (V-Reg), Had a bit of a fart on tonight, just thought i'd give yous a heads up...

When I got the car, I got two keys, just a normal looking black one (no buttons for central locking) and a central locking one with two buttons.

Both have operated the locks and started the car fine for as long as i've had it (girlfriend has the remote one, i just use the manual one in the locks)

Tonight, I unlocked the car using my 'manual' key in the drivers lock, as it was busy unlocking, my son pulled the rear door handle before the door had unlocked properly, so his door re-locked itself, he sometimes does this lol!!

I tried to open it from the inside, but it wouldnt (as if it was double locked / deadlocked?)

So I got out, put my key back in the drivers door lock, and tried to lock then unlock the car again to open his door....

disaster struck!

The whole car deadlocked itself! My other half was in the car and could not open any of the doors from inside, and to top it off, my key was stuck in the 'lock' position in the door, i could not turn the key in the lock, and could not pull the key from the lock.

I got my g/f to pop bonnet from inside, tried to disconnect/reconnect battery to try a 'pop' central locking, but nothing.

I got a lift home off a friend to get my gother halfs remote key from the house, that wouldn't unlock the car either, was just putting the interior lights on in the car when pressing unlock. The remote key wouldnt open the passenger side lock, but did open the boot with some key jiggling in the lock.

In the end my mate forced the 'manual' key that was still in the drivers door back to the unlock position, there was some nasty noises from inside the door (metal creaking etc) but at least we got the key out.

Once the key manual was out, the remote key fob started to work fine from the buttons.

So we set off home.

The remote key still works fine, but I think the door 'barrels' are now knackered, as my manual key and the remote wont even turn in the doors now, just the tailgate.

Has anything simmilar happened to anyone??

Question:

My 'manual' key now only opens the tailgate.

I'd also like a remote 2 button key like the one our lass has that still works fine.

Is it possible to program a new 2 button key with the keys we have at the moment (they're not red master keys that i'm aware of)

also, as my door locks seem to now be buggered, is it even possible? As i've read you have to turn the key in the lock 3 times...

Any help appreciated.

Many thanks.

I had something similar a year or so ago. The drivers lock barrel collapsed when I locked it manually so the key was stuck in the lock position and wouldn't come out. I could unlock the other doors using another key but the drivers door lock would activate the central locking again after a second or two. Not impossible to use but a real pain.

After lots of headscratching and minor violence I was able to remove the drivers door card from the inside to get at the lock mechanism although to release it from the handle I had to remove the drivers side rear door (not nearly as hard as it sounds - 5 minute job) and unscrew the lock mechanism from the door shell with a long torx driver. With that done I could unclip the door handle from the mechanism and remove it along with the lock barrel and key.

A quick visit to ebay provided the replacement barrel parts (I was able to reuse the actual barrel so no new keys needed) and job done.
