Its A 58 plated 2.2 which goes like stink. But the stink is the problem as the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) recycling burn off kicks in so frequently and when it does it produces clouds of burning oil smoke from under the bonnet and the smell gets inside the car - as the wife said the other day - "Im not going to miss this one when it goes back" - which is this week thankfully. This is our 3rd Galaxy (V plate 2.3, 52 plate 2.3 and this one 2.2 Diesel) and number 4 arrives this week but this time I'm going back to good old 2.0 gasoline variety and I won't be buying another Derv variety.

You can tell when the DFP recycle is running as the fuel consumption rises whilst stationary from 0.1 gals per hour when its off upto 0.4 gals per hour when its on. The clouds of burning oil smoke billowing from under the bonnet even more noticable at night with the lights nicely illuminating the haze. Ive even had people alongside pointing at the front of the car - I guess they are worried it's going to catch fire! The stench of oil smoke also gives it away even Why does the DFP recycle need to com on when I have just driven 120 miles in approaching 2 hours on the M4 and M5 ?

Reliability has also been a big issue with this one - its the first car has actually broken down without any warning and left us at the side of a pitch black motorway since I had a Rover in the early 1990's.

Anyone else having similar smokey DPF recycling events with the 2.2?

Dont know much about these ford mk3 diesels, however.....

I believe the diesel engine is a joint venture PSA Peugeot Citroen Engine.

Most of these are fitted with EOLSYS system for dpf regeneration, requiring special (and expensive) EOlSYS additive to be maintained.

A lot of owners (thanks to the power of ill advised internet forums) though just fill the additive tank with diesel, which is probably what is giving you the symptoms you describe. Also a recipe for premature DPF failure.

think i may have a very similar engine in my smax, ive been told that to ensure the dpf is working correctly, then it requires an itailian tune every few weeks for about 20 mins at high revs.

so much for these being fitted on small town cars, think its a expensive con.
