hi guys n girls.

having a few niggles with my 1.9 tdi 2001,only had it a few months so its still under warrenty, car can be fine for days but every so often it seems to be limited for power stuck @ 2000 rpm, have took it back and they cant find a prob, i.e it didnt do it for them, they have changed the MAF sensor, next day noticed intermitant hot air through blowers, next time i take it out my tempeture light came on, checked water and yes it was low, topped up and that was two days ago, went out again 150 miles no problem up hills and down, now my partners texted me saying the temp light is on, any help so i can ask the garage

Hi,

I think you have 2 problems

1. 2000RPM could be the ecu running in Limp Home Mode.

2. The worrying bit or me is the overheat, the Diesel's usually run cool and you really have to go at it to get them to run hot. when you say temperature light came on did the water gauge read max ?.

could be 1 o a number of faults i.e. Air lock, blockage or Leak.

As it is still under warranty you need to box clever here and really go to town and get it fixed...

I would take it to the garage and get them to

1. Pressure test the water system (This will show up a leak)

2. Indicator test for blown head-gasket (It detects hydrocarbons in the water and turns the liquid from blue to yellow)

don't accept the vehicle back until you have taken it for a good test drive and confirm the motor don't overheat (20 minute run with heaters on and pull back at the garage and let it tick over for 20 minutes)

OK ?

could just be a simple leak but I would get the garage to pressure test and confirm no overheat

OK ?

Hi and welcome to the forum

Get your garage to check the water pump impeller is not loose or become detached, this has been a common problem, this can be reached by removing thermostat housing, or better still replace water and because that requires removal of the cam belt change that and the tensioner and idlers aswell.

Also check the electric coolant run on pump is working aswell, if it's not working this could lead to premature head gasket failure and incorrect operation of booster heater

Loss of power could be caused by turbo overboost, being reset every time engines turned off, turbo vanes sticking is a common cause for this though carefull checking of the vacuum control pipeing for splits cracking and perishing first.

Sticking turbo vanes is caused by excess amounts of soot building up inside turbo and intake manifold.

Overboost can be confirmed by scanning with Vagcom or similar.

Thanks for the welcome Chris, and yeah I have been stopping when safe to do so and turning the key, having a smoke then carrying on with my journey, is there any thing they can do for this, like I said they've changed the maf sensor, or can the vanes be cleaned, ive no knowledge of turbos

Thanks

There is this product available

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Innotec-turbo-Cleaner-Volkswagon-Audi-and-all-Turbo-Diesel-Vehicles-/170700844299?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item27be902d0b

which users have had a result with.

You can also try operating the turbo actuating rod by hand make sure it's moving it's full travel without sticking, its quite tough to do this owing to the location and the strong spring inside the actuator.

Other than that removal of the turbo and manifold to clean out.

They do say giving these engines the Italian tune up every now and then thats flat out in third gear and holding it there for as long as you dare keeps the turbo mechanism clear, but make sure cam belt is in good nick before attemping that.

Well just a quick update guys, car returned three days ago and after them putting a new water pump on it seems to be running fine, had to top up coolant yesterday but told this was normal, the mechanic reckons power loss was down to the water pump too, as of yet I've had no power loss so time will tell.

Is it easy to remove rear door card, got a annoying ford rattle coming from the speaker area???

Thanks for all ur feed back guys, :-D
