Hi wondering if anyone can help.

I just bought a galaxy mk2 2.3 auto and have nothing but problems with it, the major one at the moment is the loss of water.

I have to keep filling the car up with water but have no sign of any leaks or no water in footwell. Also when in traffic queues it overheats and the fans dont kick in.when I have sorted this one I will move on to the next problem, ha.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Galaxy Forum.

The water problem is a tricky one I'm afraid at best it is a stuck Thermostat, Leak or Air Lock

at worst its a blown head gasket !

Most garages and the AA / RAC have a indicator system where they can sample the water and if the head gasket is gone the fluid turns from blue to yellow.

As this is a new vehicle to you IMHO I would do this first as unscrupulous owners bung Radweld or Wonderweld or leave the thermostat out just so they can sell the car !

If it passes the test you can then start ticking off the following

1. Flush the system out, give it a good Flush till plenty of clear water flows.

2. Check the thermostat and replace if failed

3. refill and bleed the system

The problem with Galaxy's is most of the old ones knocking around have been used for Taxi's or the previous owner got it cheap and didn't do any maintenance. The vehicle is 99% VW and should last but without regular maintenance even a Rolls Royce will break down.

OK ?

Hi

Thanks for the info I will look into that, can you think of a reason for the fans not kicking in to cool the engine?

I have also had a strnge thing happening all the dash lights are flashing on and off when i turn the ignition key,

cluster lights, window switch lights, heater control lights ect until I turn the headlights on then it stops.

Have you come across anything like this?

the Fans are a whole new ball game :( they have a separate sensor and it could be faulty but hey its electrics so just about anything goes.

your number 1 priority is to identify why it it overheating then we can tackle the fans and iffy dash OK ?

I have a MK1 Galaxy and have not seen that with mine, the MK2 has more bells and whistles but I suspect there is a earth fault happening with the dash the fusebox would be my first port of call have a good look and check everything is connected

Bad circulation and air in system, coolant not in contact with fan sensor can cause fans not to kick in, check out the things Amarok has said especially the stat.

Flashing dash lights could be shorting wiring in the tailgate wiring gaiter, check all back end electrics are working normally IE, lights, rear wiper heated screen.

If there's also problems with central locking, electric windows, and mirrors check drivers door wiring gaiter.

Both these locations suffer broken/chaffing wiring and play havoc with the electrics on these cars.
