Another Key Question!

I have looked through FAQs and recent posts and remain thoroughly confused. The W reg (Mk 1) TDI Galaxy I recently bought came with only one key. This key appears to be a key with just a light bulb in it which I assume is just like a torch. It opens the doors and central locking and starts the engine, but as far as I can see doesn't have a chip in it so can't be programmed. I got hold of a blank with the intention of having a spare one cut but was told by the key cutters (Timpsons) that they could do it but it would only open the door but would not start the engine because it would need a chip. They could sell me one with a chip for

yep what you have been told is correct,within your 1 and only key you will find a chip inside.

 

you could contact a decent auto locksmith.

 

do a serach on here there is so much info on the subject.

OK lets get underway my Galaxy 1997 P reg , the key is Infra Red so the 'Torch Light' is the beam :)

when you pull the button unit from the key you will see the chip in the key part.

My recommendation is get from eBay / Ford etc the exact same key you currently have I am sure someone here will help you to reprogram the key, then it will be job done

Jason,

looking at the size of the key I wonder if it has a chip fitted at all ?

On the chipped key's there is a plastic plug so you can fit the chip (it is VERY small)

I am not sure but like remote locking, alarm , rear electric windows etc it wasn't fitted to ALL the range

as you allready have a blank you might as well get it cut and give it a try ?

Haven't got the torch key myself but if it's starting the engine it must have the chip in the mould of the fob, the battery doesen't affect the starting only the central locking, I have the plastic emergency key and that starts the engine but you cant see the chip.

Guys - I have same key as Jason on my wife's mk1 - It has a chip embedded - you can neither see it nor remove it. The battery is for the light and nothing else!. As has been sdaid you just need to buy the same type of key and have the chip reprogrammed. Unfortunatley without another existing kewy this could be pricey but it shouldn't be anywhere near the

I thought that for the Mk1 you needed the security key to program another key to the PATS, with the mk2 you need 2 working keys to program a third..

Many thanks for all the replies. The "embedded" chip makes sense, but I think I'll get the blank cut and give it a try on the assumption that it can't do any harm (I hope!). Failing that I'll try and find a friendly auto-locksmith. There must be some around :)
