Hi all ,

I a newbie but hoping i can get some answers on this one .

My P reg 2.0 petrol has an intermitant but getting worse by the day starting issue , it all started when i tried to start it one day and it turned over but would start up , into the garage it went and came back after a diag came up with a relay ( not sure which one but they gave me the old one so i could check if need be).

New relay fitted and the car worked for a few days problem free , then once again it happened .

Back to the garage it went , they tried another relay and still no joy but then rang to say the car will start if i pull down the fuse box under the dash and wiggle the wires a bit .

Tried this and it seems to work but not for long , the car will cut out sometimes and other the wiggle effect makes no difference at all .

Like i say the garage have told us if we get another fuse box this should solve the issue , does this sound right ?

Also , i dont know if it's related but the engine will never rev above 4500 and seems to lack power randomly , could this be anything to do with the fuse box ? ( we have been told maybe a mass air flow issue )

thanks for any info on this , me and the mrs really like our galaxy and wouldn't want to get rid of it because of this .

Hi and welcome to the forum

The relay you had changed does it have 30 on the cover or another number, im thinking perhaps the wrong relay has been changed.

It has been known for the fuse box connections to the relay base to become loose (i.e. the wires that are pushed on spades behind the fuse box) , but a faulty relay 30 (fuel pump relay) is by far the most common fault.

after closer inspection the relay replaced by the garage has the number 167 on it , no idea what this is for but the new doesn't have that number . im going to check it later to see the number they fitted .

After a bit of searching ive got another fuse box with relay 167 in place too coming to me on friday , hopefully i can fit this myself without any issues and save myself any more garage fees.

Welcome,

there are lots of scrap Galaxy, Sharan and Alhambra's so you should get a replacement fuse box but I would check it for loose connections (I don't know why the garage didn't as it sounds a poor service when they tell you this !)

On a slightly different track, the revving problem could be down to a blocked fuel filter (Under the floor drivers side and easy to change) I would suggest a service, i.e. Engine Oil & Filter, Fuel filter and Air filter. If your money could stretch some new plugs. I have just done this on my V6 Galaxy and she now purrs like a pussy cat and growls like a lion :)

its funny cause i have a n reg 2.0l aspen and mine seems the same with the revs.....just doesn't seem interested once it gets to a certain rev (between 4000 an 4500)....i've noticed that the tube that comes of the air filter into the mass flow meter is missing a clip and one side is not tight....figured it might be getting too much air flowing through (dunno if that would be a problem) but think i will try a new fuel filter
