chrisaj Posted September 14, 2011 Report Posted September 14, 2011 I have an R-reg Ford Galaxy. Lately, the temperature gauge has started moving around from just below normal range to about half-way round. I have checked thecoolant level (no problem). The car does not appear to be overheating. In stationary traffic the gauge goes to about the halfway mark. Once traffic is flowing again, the needle willslowly move back down and then up again. Any ideas what the problem might be? Also, I don't recall seeing/hearing the engine cooling fan coming on. Should it come on during normal operating conditions? Quote
chrispb123456 Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 Hi and welcome to the forum You haven't give a clue to which engine you have so am going to guess at 2.3 petrol if so replace your thermostat. Quote
deadpool2e Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 I have this problem also on a 2001 tdi 1.9 but mine goes all the way to 130 and says stop and check coolant. The engine is not over heating and coolant is fine. Any ideas? Does it from cold also... Quote

The engine is not over heating and coolant is fine. Any ideas? Does it from cold also...I presume as it heats up it goes up steadily until it reaches 130? IIRC your year and engine were fitted with water pumps with plastic impellers. In time the plastic impeller detaches from the shaft and doesnt spin as intended. New water pump to fix. Or does the gauge go to 130 immediately your switch on when cold? - that would be an electrical fault, possibly the water temperature sensor is faulty or the connector has become disconnected. deadpool2e Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 (edited) Yeah goes straight to 130 from start. Is it the sensor at the bottom of the bottle behind the battery? And then goes down then up again very intermittently....its a pain in the ass Edited January 19, 2012 by deadpool2e Quote
