bfc1001 Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 i fitted my second hand replacement run on pump yesterday . i tested it before fitting and was working ok and when i fitted it it was working fine . the only problem i have with it is as soon as i turn off the ignition the pump stops running . dosent matter if the water is up to full temp or cold , no matter what i do it just turns off as soon as engine stops. ive searched the internet and only found one other thread where someone s had the same problem but sadly there was no resolution on the post. anyone any idea s ? cheers. daddyfixit Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 switch ignition on so you can tell its NOT working, then start tapping it with a pair of pliers or a screwdriver--- to see if it does kick in ?? if it does after you belted it, more than likely it needs the brushes doing. Quote
bfc1001 Posted July 22, 2011 Author Report Posted July 22, 2011 its definately working bud. i removed the fan housing before fitting then plugged it up to the car with my old one still in situ . i could clearly see the motor spinning but as soon as i switched engine off it stopped . i fitted it after and when the engine is on and u feel it it is definately still working. bfc1001 Posted July 22, 2011 Author Report Posted July 22, 2011 (edited) sorry mirez , its an 03 galaxy tdi 130 . ps just put a signature on! Edited July 22, 2011 by bfc1001 Quote
SilverBeast Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 I have a 2005 TDI 130. I have recently replaced the brushes in my "run on" pump as it wasn't working. Mine also doesn't run on after the ignition is switched off. It is definitely running when the engine is. I wondered if maybe a change was made to the engine management so that it no longer runs the pump after the engine is turned off. On the other hand I have the following fault on VAG-COM: 17664 - Engine Coolant Temp Sensor (G62): Open or Short to Plus P1256 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent Mine is a two pin "blue" sensor. I got a replacement from one of the other Forum members who bought it in error (a few years ago!). I connected this up (without exchanging) while I was fixing the run on pump, but the fault didn't clear, so I assume the fault is in the wiring and didn't bother to change it as I have read on the forum this is somewhat awkward - it was hard enough disconnecting the connection by feel! The Temperature guage seems to work OK, and the car runs fine, but I wondered if this may be causing the run-on pump to not run-on! Richard Quote
Mirez Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 No worries, in which case its held on by K245. 412-03A-00-019: Things to check:Fuse F18 is intactFuse F34 is intact F18 being the supply to the pump, F34 being the relay supply. Assuming they are both ok, then either the relay is defective or the coolant temperature sensor's 2nd side has gone open circuit. Quote
bfc1001 Posted July 22, 2011 Author Report Posted July 22, 2011 (edited) just checked f18 and 34 . both ok so that leaves the relay or the coolant temp sensor . i guess the relay is behind the fuse box (any ideas what number and level ?) but i dont know where the coolant temp sensor is . is it easy to get to? ive no fault s on vag com regards the coolant temp sensor so would that indicate faulty relay? SilverBeast Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 @bfc1001Look at this thread MK II Coolant Sensor Replacement for details on the coolant sensor. It's NOT easy to get at. @MirezAs my coolant sensor only has two pins on the connector does it still contain two actual sensors with the body as Ground? I am aware some sensors have 4 contacts so assumed that they contained two actual sensors and mine only had one. Thanks Quote
Mirez Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 Pahhh its easy enough, changed mine in about 20 minutes lol the relays probably harder to do :) - I believe its only one sender, they don't always show up as faulty though, log the reading's whilst going for a drive and see if its reporting a steady temp or fluctuating. bfc1001 Posted July 28, 2011 Author Report Posted July 28, 2011 im fitting cruise control to my gal next week so while im in the fuse box i was thinking of looking at the relay that runs the run on pump . just wondered if anyone knows which one it is? cheers . Quote
chrispb123456 Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 Relay K245 that Mirez pointed out refers to relay number 449 in position R13, be carefull as there are several relays with 449 on them, I would also check the power supply to fuse 18 first Quote
bfc1001 Posted July 28, 2011 Author Report Posted July 28, 2011 many thanks chris . ill let u know how i get on after my hol s . Quote
SilverBeast Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 I logged coolant temperature today while driving. It never goes much above 75C on VAG-COM, though the guage reads 90C. Can anyone tell me if this is normal? It doesn't seem right to me. The car runs fine and seems to accelerate normally. With the error code listed above, which also happened with a replacement sensor bought in error by another Forum member, I wonder if it is possible that the temperature sensor has been changed before I bought the car and the wrong one fitted. Does anyone with the same model (130BHP, ASZ engine - Mirez?) know what colour their coolant sensor is. Mine is blue and has two pins. Thanks,Richard Quote
