This is my first posting and need your help. I bought a Galaxy at the end of May from a 'mechanic' in Gloucester who told me that the only problem was the central locking and the drivers window that didn't work. Anyway, it appears that things may have been tidied up to get it off the drive and get it home to Malvern! I'm determined not to let it beat me though and although don't want to spend a fortune I want to get it all up and running as cost-effectively as possible and come out with an old but decent little motor. So, well shall I start?

1. The biggest problem that has occured in last ten days is that when I slow down into first or neutral the revs drop to around 500 - 700 and then either stalls with wheel lock (handy!) or it will fire back up just as you think it has stalled. Doing it more and more, incredibly annoying and worrying!

2. After about ten days of driving I started to get a squealing noise when turning on the ignition. It doesn't happen every time but probably every 3 - 4 times. There then seemed to be a squealing sort of noise (good for attracting attention) when you are under 2000 revs, over that it seems to stop and it does seem to stop or quieten down after about ten minutes of driving.

3. Central locking not working at all!

4. Drivers windows held up with lolly-pop sticks - nice look and really hot at this time of the year!post-36025-0-24490700-1309092964_thumb.jpg

5. Both control panels on the doors for windows, mirrors etc are broken although do work - if that makes sense!post-36025-0-06225700-1309092894_thumb.jpgpost-36025-0-46804400-1309093029_thumb.jpg

6. Think the drivers and passengers seats have been cleaned previously with motor oil - any good seat cleaning tips?

7. Drivers and passengers windows look like they are covered in glue?

8. Two standard wheel trims missing!post-36025-0-32695800-1309092700_thumb.jpgpost-36025-0-12482700-1309092764_thumb.jpgpost-36025-0-39131800-1309092832_thumb.jpg

Anyway, that's enough for my first post. Any ideas, thoughts, comments? Anyone know of a good, reliable and trustworthy mechanic/garage in the Malvern area I can work with on the project? Any help would be fantastic.

Hope to hear soon.

Hi and welcome to the forum

Am going to assume this is a 2.0 or 2.3 petrol

Common problem for your point 1 is the idle control valve needs to be removed and cleaned with carb cleaner.

Point 2 is the squealing inside or outside the car?

Point 3 maybe broken wiring in door gaiters and possibly blown fuses

Point 4 door window mechanism broken or glass detached from lifter.

Point 6 - There are zips on the seat covers at the rear bottom - I think its possible to remove the seat covers (and bung them into a washing machine)

Point 2 - loud squealing from the engine when running is often the alternator belt slipping - solution is to tighten belt (and replace if its falling to bits)

Thanks for the comments; very much appreciated. Will tackle the alternator belt slipping. Can a simpleton like me tighten it or do you need a bit of technical expertise?
