Glasgowmary Posted June 24, 2011 Report Posted June 24, 2011 Hope someone can help as I am going cross eyed reading!Went on holiday for 2 weeks ,on arrival back my 2001 Galaxy won't turn over. All the electrics seem to work ,if the headlights are on and you try to start the car there's is no power to the starter motor an the headlights go off untill you release the key.Have replaced battery in the key and the car, still nothing .I only have 1 key which is a remote key which opens the oors but isn't opening thme remotely. The pats chip is in the key as well.Have read about a 20 second sequence which didn't work, also light on the door flashes when you lock it manually but people mention light beside clock ,I don't appear to have this light.Any help would be great asI am going mad here.. chrispb123456 Posted June 24, 2011 Report Posted June 24, 2011 So you have a 2001 MK2 2.3 manual thats fine. If there's no clicking or noise from the starter then go there first, check connections on starter and earth from engine to chassis, if they look good check for current at the solenoid wire on the starter when turning key, or if your brave short circuit the solenoid terminal to the starter + terminal this should energise the starter. Report back. Quote
Glasgowmary Posted June 24, 2011 Author Report Posted June 24, 2011 Will try all of those things over the weekend and will definitley report back ,right now I am in overload as you can see from the heading I gave my post:)Should have said "2001 Galaxy won't turn over,no power to starter !!Thank you all for your time and effort lots to try, thanks again.Mary Quote
Glasgowmary Posted June 24, 2011 Author Report Posted June 24, 2011 How do I check the current ?Sorry I am a bit new to all of this so just finding my way. Quote
Barlidge Posted June 24, 2011 Report Posted June 24, 2011 If energising one circuit causes another to fail the prime suspect is earth/negative failure, most circuits have independant positive feeds but share a common negative. IIRC the starter negative is via the engine block to a common earthing point on the body shared with the negative terminal of the battery so I would check this first, undo it, clean it and then make sure its nice and tight, if it cures your problem brush a little grease over it afterwards to help prevent water ingress. chrispb123456 Posted June 24, 2011 Report Posted June 24, 2011 How do I check the current ?Sorry I am a bit new to all of this so just finding my way.As said this is just a quick check to test starterThe picture shows a view from under the car looking at starter motor, you will see the two terminals, the larger one is the lead from the battery + terminal, the small one is the feed from ignition switch. Now you need a short length of wire, you need to bridge the two terminals on the starter, the starter should operate immedietly you touch both terminals, Alternativly you could use your jump leads (space permitting) connect battery - to the earth lead on starter, connect battery + then touch solenoid terminal. If there's no life from starter you will need to replace, if it turns over then you have a problem elsewhere report back Quote
dix Posted July 3, 2011 Report Posted July 3, 2011 Hi,Looking thru your posts but i dont see a post stating that you have got sorted,if you havent then the 1st thing i would do is to check the battery even though your headlights etc come on this doesnt mean that the battery is ok,if you have a dud cell your lights will still work, try getting a jump start if you have no means of checking the battery ,you can also eliminate a bad earth connection by getting a jump lead ,put 1 terminal onto the negative pole on the battery & the other terminal onto a good clean section of the engine & if this cures it then the earth lead could be loose but i think i would check the battery 1st Quote
