rcgbob44 Posted June 16, 2011 Report Posted June 16, 2011 The air con on my 53 pLATE 1.9 tdi Ghia does nor work. The garage has re filled the system etc and still no cold air. As I can't find a Haynes manual that seems to cover my bus can anyone tell me what fuses I should look at as a starting point? Quote
chrispb123456 Posted June 17, 2011 Report Posted June 17, 2011 2.3.16.18.20.21.22.32.33. all these fuses cover certain parts of aircon, but they also cover other circuits.Does your radiator cooling fans run when aircon is in Auto mode, and have you noticed the display flashing recently when switching on ignition. Can you hear a click from the compressor clutch when switching between Auto and Econ. You may need to run Vagcom too check for error codes. seatkid Posted June 17, 2011 Report Posted June 17, 2011 Dont forget there are a number of switches that can stop the compressor from working. 1. External temp switch located under the front bumper drivers side (normally stops the compressor if temp is less than 5 deg C) 2. Icing switch (Ford engines only) - this thermostatic switch is located on the evaporator unit behind the dash. 3. 3 way pressure switch (located near the dryer on the Mk 1) - this will stop the compressor if the system has too little or too much gas. Miggins Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 (edited) Hello seatkid, I have had my system checked but the compressor isn't receiving any power. Can you advise on the best way to test these switches please? 1. External temp - I assume this is normally closed when the temp is above 5C? 2. Icing switch (Ford engines only) - NA as I have a SEAT 1.9 PD (2003) 3. 3 way pressure switch (located near the dryer on the Mk 1) - I have a MKII but assume it is located in the same area (struggling to find it!). Can you ID what I would expect to get if I put a meter on - with/without the wiring connected? Is it OK to directly power the compressor (for a short time) just to see if the solenoid/clutch is ok ? Thanks Edited July 11, 2011 by Miggins Quote

Thanks You could power the compressor with the engine off if you are worried about the compressor being damaged. You should hear a loud clack as the electromagnetic clutch in the pulley pulls in. 3 way pressure switch on a Mk2 is somewhere else - I'm sure its been covered in the forum so try a search. I don't have a Mk2 so can't advise. Do have electronic climate control? (i.e. the LCD panel in the centre console) That will flash for about 15 seconds when ignition is turned on if the 3 way pressure switch is tripped due to low or high pressure or is disconnected. chrispb123456 Posted July 13, 2011 Report Posted July 13, 2011 The 3 way pressure switch on the MK2 is behind the drivers side front fog lamp, can be accessed by removing engine undertray or removing part of O/S wheel arch liner, the external temperature sender on MK2 is toward the N/S front fog lamp visible behind the lower grille, providing it's showing the correct outside ambient temperature on the display that's OK.And as already said check with Vagcom for error codes.12 volts approx with plug connected on clutch.Cooling fans should also be running when in Auto mode (climate) Quote
Miggins Posted July 13, 2011 Report Posted July 13, 2011 Thanks Guys seatkid, Yes it does have the LCD panel and it doesn't flash (was previously advised if there was an error it would flash but didnt know the conditions). I've already removed the under tray so as soon as, I'll have a look underneath and power the clutch. Chris, Error codes:Ex-VAG mechanic checked - I think he used the Snap-On tool(?). I don't know if these report on the air con error codes for VAG however none were displayed. If I remember correctly it is displaying a valid external temp.....(will confirm) If its not the 3 way switch or the external temp sensor, what else would result in no power to the clutch? Thanks again - will report back as soon as. Quote
Miggins Posted July 17, 2011 Report Posted July 17, 2011 OK Found the pressure sensor/switch behind the RHS foglamp - Thanks With the aircon on auto the radiator fan is not spinning. I have been unable to get a meter on the high/low pressure switch connectors (need to come at it from the wheel arch not from the undertray) Can anyone ID the test criteria for the high/low pressure sensor/switch? I need to confirm there is enough refrigerant in the system to allow it to operate. As the the system isn't 'pumping' (motor is not engaged) I assume I will be testing the 'static' pressure settings but these should trip the low pressure switch (if the Aircon Eng put in enough refridgerant as he stated)? Thanks in anticipationDave Quote
