Hi all,

Have just renewed a broken air con pipe on a 2002, 1.9tdi Galaxy Ghia (the pipe that goes down the front of the engine and then turns to go into the compressor).

Have had it charged and it's holding the gas OK. However, no cold air. The compressor is turning all the time and the only way to get the clutch to disengage is by turning the climate control to ECON mode. The compressor even turns when the temp inside the car is set to Hi. When the engine is first started the pipe to the condensor gets a bit warm and the other pipe gets a bit cold, but no cold air.

Any suggestions gratefully received. No VAG Com fault codes and the display doesn't flash when you put the ignition on. The only thig I can think is that the filter drier is blocked (but I can't remember where it is?).

Does anyone's air con work for more than 3 months at a time or is it just me? I've spent a small fortune on it over the years.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there

The aircon compressor will run continuously when in the auto mode as should the cooling fans by the radiator, check make sure they are running?

Was the pressures and output temperature checked with engine running.

Did a specialist do the gas service or did you entrust to a pop in place like dare I say it Kwik fit.

My compressor and fans do not run continually when in Auto, it only runs when the climate control thinks it is needed or when the demist function is selected.

The gas pressure can drop enough for the aircon not to work efficiently but still enough pressure not to trigger the cut-out switch and flashing display. I had that then when I had the leak at the top of the drier on the front of thcondenseror under the plastic cap and I had similar symptoms to you.

There is also a small possibility that when you lost you gas, the compressor seized and the shaft broke inside, the clutch will still spin but nothing is turning inside. Again there the compressor could be damaged from when it had no gas and now cannot create the pressure to work. If you have either of these, there will be little effect on the engine when the clutch engages, if the compressor is working, you can hear the load on the engine as it cuts in and out.

In VAG-COM you can get more readings on what is happening in the climate control system such as the vents and temperature at different points in the system.
