Hi there, sorry, this is going to be a bit long winded but here goes :) My 1995 2.0 litre petrol recently passed its mot and all seemed well. Until last wednesday, there was a loud hissing noise from below the bonnet and it couldn't pull a kipper off a plate. I'm not sure about the correct terminology with this but I'll try. Two rubber hoses next to what looks like a small funnel next to the manifold had blown off and despite my best efforts they wold not stay put. They run towards a valve attached to the bulkhead on the righthand side of the engine bay. I also discovered that the air flow meter was not connected so i hooked in the multiplug. this made matters worse. On the right hand side of the engine compartment beside the battery, there is what looks like a vaccuum pump with a large canister attached - the canister is filthy - can anyone tell me what this is, and can it be cleaned or replaced?? I'm not sure if the egr valve attached to the bulkhead on the left hand side of engine compartment could be at fault, but I am getting short of ideas!! I know much has been written on this site on similar subjects so I apologise if this has gone on a bit!!There is also the possibilty that the cat is knackered too :) Can anyone offer me some advice please, before I lose the rest of my sanity!

Many thanks in advance Brian

Hi there

And welcome to the forum! I'm not familiar with this engine but do remember someone having this problem with pipes blowing off and if I remember correctly the exhaust gas is blowing the pipes off, cant remember what the conclusion was but I would guess at a faulty EGR valve or the control valve.

Seems hard to believe it passed the MOT emissions test with MAF disconnected and possibly faulty CAT.

The large canister thingy is probably the secondary air pump or associated valve, this is all connected to help reduce emissions.

You can do a search on these items as most things have been covered at some point before.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply I'm going to have another crack at it tomorrow and see what happens. I agree with you about the maf not being connected, unless it was and I hadn't noticed - which is entirely possible! I'll keep reading and get to the bottom it, with a little help!

Thanks again Bry

Brian,

try and take some photo's you can then upload them to the forum it will make it easier for people to identify the pipes

Hi again,

I have replaced the maf today, but this has made no difference power wise, but it doesn't cut out now that it I have connected the multiplug. I have uploaded some photos, however I havent done this before so no idea whether I have done this right.

I have placed cable ties on the pipes that keep coming off, I know its probably not the right thing to do, but i cant drive the car at the moment. I have traced the pipes back to a gizmo on the bulkhead that the haynes manual identifies as a transducer. If someone can tell me what the large valve which I have marked as 'egr' is? Maybe someone can correct me on this.

Many thanks in advance

Brian

Thats not the EGR, that's the secondary air pump which is to aid combustion during warm up. The units on the bulkhead are valves.

The EGR valve is mounted on the intake manifold with a smaller pipe connecting to the exhaust manifold, the three valves you mention in the picture the first on the left controls the EGR valve

Hi again, further to my previous posts, I copied this post from last year which seems to display similar symptoms to my own.

Yes they are pressure hoses! they are the EGR systems pressure tranducer sensor hoses, your (the op's) and others talk about Turbo's doesnt help the diagnoses of your problem! my guess is you have a 2lt dohc petrol engine with a blocked ERG valve/system

Thanks, it's off to the garage tomorrow then. I'll report back

It was the cat, broke down and caused a blockage, hence pressure build up and pipe blowing off.
