Hello

Sorry in advance if post has been covered else where

i have a 2001 Galaxy mark 2 Zetec that cuts out at junctions

has P0500 speed sensor malfunction fault

so far ive been told ECU is faulty --the siganl is not getting to the ECU

the instrument cluster is faulty -- but the speedo is working

speed sensor fauly ---brand new ford sensor fitted

idle control valve sticking ---replaced valve

power relay fauly ---R30 replaced

clutch switch checked and is working ok

i have bought engineckeck software and cable

all fuctions RPM OXY etc

it shows zero speed

this has been confirmed by mobile diagnostic tuning guy tried two types of kit

so the fault is no speed

Please can anyone shed a light on this

any help would be gratefully recieved

also tried vag com with OBD2 cable but came up with No Controller Found

any ideas with this also please

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I would carefully check engine/gearbox wiring harness for breaks/corrosion at joints/connectors, I'm guessing you have the 2.3 petrol engine unfortunately Vagcom does not work with the Ford engines (2.0 & 2.3 are Ford)

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Thank you for your reply

I am an electrician so the first thing I did after replacing the sensor was to

check all the wiring through the engine loom right back to the junction

Behind the battery the fact that the speedo works tells me the wiring is ok

If I unplug the sensor the car drives but the speedo does not

If the vag com will not work what system can I get to check problems

With the parking sensors etc

Thank you

Vagcom should work with the parking sensor controller, its only the engine that it won't connect to and you'll need fords WDS system or a generic OBD2 scanner. You won't get vagcom working with a generic OBD2 cable though as it requires a K line interface cable instead.

Diagnosis isn't as strait forward as on most car's due to the way the ford engine is interfaced to VW controllers around the car, The speed signal is passed from the gearbox sensor to the ECU and instrument cluster, from there the cluster creates the VAG speed signal and sends it around the rest of the car so there are in effect, two speed signals present. The fact you've changed the signal generator on the box and the speedo works would suggest that the cluster is receiving the correct Ford speed signal from the gearbox and interpreting it correctly. However since the engine and sensors are controlled by a Ford ECU then the issue can't be with the VAG signal and we go back to looking at the Ford side of things again. I take it that you can't clear the P0500 fault? Is it that you can't connect to clear it or that you clear it and it comes back? Its certainly not unheard of but a lack of a speed signal generally wouldn't stall the car...

Hello Mirez

I can clear it with the engine check software now and again the

Engine management light comes on and goes back off a couple of days

later.

Any ideas why I can't see any speed data

Interesting that you say speed signal would not stall

the car as I've been told the speed signal controls the idle control valve

The latest thing I've been told is to replace the speedo clocks as

The signal goes to the clocks then to the ECU

Thanks for your help

No the ecu controls the ISCV based on a number of sensors and not just the VSS signal, Looking at the wiring diagrams it appears the 2.3 uses the traditional VAG system rather then Ford's own in that the instrument cluster does generate the signal for the ECU. However they don't make clear if the Ford ECU is using the VAG speed signal instead of a traditional ford signal which could explain why you can't read a speed signal with the software. I would advise getting Vagcom up and working and connected to the instrument cluster and the parking system - both should be able to show you a speed signal and the park system is receiving the same output that the ECU seems to.

If the signal is derived from the cluster

Could it be that it is faulty

I have unplugged it and checked the cables and plugs

they all look ok

I have the ford TIS cd and can see the path that the cable takes from the sensor to the cluster

I have just ordered a obd2 409.1 kkl interface from eBay

Is that the right one

Hello Mirez have I ordered the right cable

Thanks mark

Yes, sounds like it :angry2:

hello

Cable came today and ive managed to connect it to the cra with VCDS lite

it has connected to the insruments and come up with

01316 ABS control module

49-10-No Communications -Intermittent

parkings sensors nothing at all

the pipe for the rear wash came off soaked the foot well so I think its naffed

what do you think

also could not do full scan as shareware version

thanks again

Connect to the ABS controller and see what that reports...

This is the complicated bit I was referring to earlier, the ABS system creates VAG pulses and since the instrument cluster is a VAG part then it probably has no bearing on your actual fault - have you cleared this code? Comms errors can be generated for a number of reasons, not least a flat battery so reset it, drive it and then check if its come back.

In Measuring blocks the ABS controller should be able to give you the vehicle speed.

Comm error a red herring

When I took the cluster out and started the car it must have come up I tried it again and the same fault has come up

Measuring blocks

Cluster

I can see speed if I drive it when plugged in ( only on the drive though)

also

Abs

I can see individual speeds but I cannot access the ecu what module should it be

Thanks mark

Mirez

ive fitted another set of clocks

guesss what same fault

have managed to get the ecu out

its the vw part 7M5-906-022K

ford part YM2A-12A650-FD

Im going to check the wiring to make sure i have continuity betwwen the the speedo and ecu

if thats ok i think that the ECU needs repiaring

can you suggest a company

i spoke withh BBA Reman and we are looking at

Whoo bloody hoo

i have just fixed the fault

Terminal 28( Green white )comes from the VSS on the gearbox voltage 0 or 12

Terminal 3 (Purple )on the cluster socket goes to the ECU parking module temp gauge speed control

i was getting 0.50 Vdc max

disonnected the wire on the cluster at terminal 3 and got 12v at the terminal

found after a lot of checks the voltage was sinking from this terminal

disconnected the parking module and the fault has cleared

will take out of the car tomorrow

Does any one know if these can be repaired

Mirez Thanks for the assistance

No worries.

Generally, if a modules been under water then it'll be unrepairable but fortunately you can pick them up on ebay for

Posted

The breaker who sold me the clocks has sent me a module untested for me to try free of charge

I've just ordered a new loom for the rear sensors as it's damaged at two of the plugs eBay 10 pounds

If you pm me your address or email me it

I'll donate mine to you

Any chance you can tell me where you got the bits for the bonnet mod I read on another post
