I am quite new to this forum after just buying my first Shalaxy, in my case a MK1 Sharan. I paid just over £1600 for her and will do almost all of the work to her myself. This site seems to be mostly people who take their car to the dealers or other mechanics to have work done.

This got me thinking, as most MK1 Shalaxys are now coming down to the "Budget" end of the market, this site will become an invaluable tool to those like me who have just reciently been able to buy a car that was perviously too expensive and who work on their own cars and wont use dealers.

My question is this? How many of you out there in Shalaxy land own a mk1 and do most of your own work to it? Do you enjoy working on the car?

As a previous owner of several different kinds of cars i would say that this is as easy to work on as some of the early 90s fords. I think that it is refreshing to look under the car and not need a computer science degree to diagnose a faulty fuel pump.

what are your thoughts?

i agree, i do most work on the car cos i cant afford garage bills, plus i have an inbuilt mistrust of these having been ripped off once or twice, and had tol put botch jobs right again.

i do consider myself at the very least, competent, with a spanner. but the galaxy is a new experiance for me, and i sought help here when my cam belt tentioner went, but the advice i got was a bit vague and i still havnt put it all back together yet lol.

really? i think not,

there are loads of members on here who own a mk 1,just because your post/thread hasnt had the answers your looking for doesnt mean its a problem that hasnt been asked before, try doing a search for your problem,it may mean delving into the guts of the forum by a few years, but most if not all problems have had an answer to it.

this site has been around for a number of years now,and from the time i joined even then, the ethos of advice was to carryout d.i.y.

only at the last resort does anyone take there car to a stealers.

there are a lot of people on here willing to get there hands dirty to save there hard earned hence why forums like this exist.and to offer advice,

there are certain things that have advice given for a mechanic visit rather then diy, like brakes etc and any other major safty equipment,

especially if the poster has never done anything like this before.

ive watched numerous people change brakes/disks/fluid but personally would never tackle a job like this so i would go to someone more knowledgable then myself.

if you havnt found the faqs in the tech section of the forum then take a look plenty of info on how to get your hands dirty.
