Tony T Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 I've got a Mk2 1.9TDI Auto, what should I get to the gallon, best so far is 36-38mpg on a 300 mile motorway journey doing steady 70-75 mph. Hear people say they get 50-55mpg, are they dreaming? Quote
bj2004 Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 No mine returns at least 50 on a run like that with roof box and trailer just running about i get 210 miles to 25 ltrs Quote

Hear people say they get 50-55mpg, are they dreaming?Yes and No. You can only get 50-55mpg in a well maintained Manual (not Auto) 1.9 Diesel when driving around 60mph or less with very steady right foot (or cruise control) and in good conditions (warm day, windless or favourable wind, good road, tyres pumped up hard etc etc) Pull back even 5 mph and you will see significantly better mpg. It drops like a brick above 70mph Quote

Hear people say they get 50-55mpg, are they dreaming?Hi Tony T Welcome to the forum MPG has always been a bone of contention so many factors can affect MPG. Some examples that will reduce MPG are; 1. Tyre condition and pressures2. Brakes binding3. Mechanical condition/regularly serviced4. Driving style 5. Road/weather conditions MPG between 40 & 45 are achievable with careful but sometimes unrealistic (not normal) driving, I've had mine 7 years now and it always does better in the summer months. I would say what your getting (36 to 38) should be easily achievable on a long run, but you would need to really read the road, light throttle and then foot off throttle going down hill to get near 50+ Quote

Mirez Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 30mpg is certainly low for a diesel, even the auto's should be getting 40+ with normal driving so check the key things as Chris mentions above. Driving style certainly has a lot to do with it though - I drive the galaxy the say way I drive the golf and normally see between 35 and 40mpg, If Steph drives then its always above 40 and normally on the good side, edging towards 50mpg. I still haven't fathomed out the difference as we take almost exactly the same time to do the same journey and even if I'm consciously trying I still can't get it that high. Then again flip that and the same is true of the Golf, I can get 70mpg (just) out of that where she struggles to get above 50 - I don't really know where I'm going with this post, normally I have a conclusion to make but on the subject of MPG? Phhh! Quote
steve_r Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 I consistently get 48-50 on my run to work which is 40 miles down fairly clear trunk roads. I can get 55 on a motorway trip if I take it easy. My record is 64 on a 100 mile motorway trip when I had more time than I needed so I just sat in with the trucks at about 58mph I think you need to be doing longer journeies to get this - for the first 10 miles or so my CPU says about 40 then it stretches out. All in all including the short trips I average about 46. Steve Quote
Mirez Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 Well in interesting thing I've learned recently is to ignore conventional wisdom when driving the Galaxy! The norm is to change up as quickly as possible but I've found recently that letting it rev a little higher and keeping it lower gears when the speeds not as high has had a massive improvement. Ie, at 50mph I used to be in 6th, whereas now I'm still in 4th or just in 5th and I'm now getting it much higher then before. Quote
