terryb Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 (edited) hi this is my first time on this site and so far im well impressed, now i hope some one may be able to help ?. just bought a mk1 2.3 ghia on a 97 p/plate gal manual with an alleged faulty clutch, car has 84k certified mls and a so & so to get into gear but as it is a very clean example i bought it anyway the 2nd time i took it out to go to the garage, halfway across a busy roundabout there was a very loud bang from g/box area and it came out of gear so i had force it into 2nd another bang and it got drive again now theres no drive in any gear, the clutch pedal seems to be ok as when you let the clutch up you can here something spinning.now has the box gone or was it the clutch disintigrating local garage have said if i supply all parts they will charge Edited January 28, 2011 by terryb Quote
sparky Paul Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 It's not going to be easy to guess between clutch or gearbox without actually splitting the gearbox off and investigating, but I would be a bit worried if the car bounced out of gear when the bang occured. Fortunately, the manual gearbox is a generally pretty robust, and that means there are plenty of reasonable secondhand units about. if the car is otherwise good, it's certainly worth a go at that price. sparky Paul Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 There are no particular difficulties removing the gearbox from the Galaxy, but this job on any front wheel drive car is not for the faint hearted... especially laid on your back on the driveway, under the car on axle stands. It's much easier, quicker and safer on a proper ramp with some support facilities. An assistant is essential. Basically it's a matter of removing parts for access, supporting the engine, removing the gearbox mounting, splitting both bottom ball joints to allow removal of the driveshafts, then disconnecting all cables, wiring and any other obstacles before removal of the gearbox. There is just enough room to remove the gearbox by rotating it before drawing it off the engine and dropping it out of the bottom of the car. It sounds simple enough, but there's a fair bit of work involved. A clutch aligmnent tool is required to replace the clutch, either purchased or improvised, and if you dare doing it on the driveway, large axle stands and a couple of trolley jacks. Quote

terryb Posted January 28, 2011 Author Report Posted January 28, 2011 Evening all, thanks for the welcome and the advice/help, on reflection im not sure if the car jumped out of gear or if i knocked it out as it all happened so quick and was a bit hairy as i didnt want to get t-boned by an artic or have the row of cars run into the back of me.!!! anyway on looking at her this morn it looks like you can still select gears although slightly notchy, ie; gear stick will move into all gear positions,i have done a clutch before on a sierra rwd so im tempted to have a go at this one i have a good selection of tools etc and if i get stuck itll have to be a job 4 a mobile mechanic, can anyone recomend a good brand of ball joint splitter ? or any good tips on the process ? will my halfords 2 ton trolley jack lift it high enough or do i need to get a high lift one ? many thanks all terryb <_< :) Quote

As for a trolley jack, you will need to jack up the engine as well as lower the gearbox down, so two jacks are handy. You can drop the engine onto a stand, but the second jack helps if you need to move the engine about a bit when taking the 'box off. The higher lift the better, but you can pack the gap up a bit, of course. The best tip I can give is to let someone else do it, especially when it's this cold outside... Brrrr! <_< Quote
Bigjeeze Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 One thing to remember is that the gearbox is very very heavy!! Around 100kg - you will need two people one underneath and one on top to help take the weight - The jack only gets you so far then you have to manually lower it . Quote

sparky Paul Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 hi all well finally got it up and running ,turned out it was clutch plate seperated Great news. It's good to hear a positive outcome, and another lease of life for an older Galaxy. FWIW, I still prefer the look of the mk.1... if only the seats were a bit more supportive and the interior more modern, it would be perfect!
