I've noticed a rattly noise when ticking over. Looking at the belt tensioner it seems to be moving quite a bit, and when I turn on the heated screens it makes it worse, and a squeaking noise starts. I guess it shouldn't be doing this? Are these things adjustable or is it a case of changing the whole thing? Or should I be looking at the alternator pulley seeing as increased electrical load seems to make it worse?

Cheers

Hi

Assuming you have MK2 1.9TDI

The alternator pulley is the usual culprit, occasionally causing the battery charge light to flash on and can make the power steering feel a bit notchy, there's no adjustment on the belt tensioner so if it's lost tension replace the whole thing.

Turn the steering wheel from full lock to opposite full lock, if you get the chirpping at full lock then I'd suspect the alternator pulley, if not then I'd suspect the tensioner. If either are worn then it's likely the belt is worn too and worth changing.

Cheers guys. I do get the full lock chirping, so I guess the alternator pulley is the first thing to change. Is the metal block part of the tensioner supposed to move backwards and forwards?
