steve_r Posted January 16, 2011 Report Posted January 16, 2011 Hi My 54 tdi (125000m) has for a while had a shake when you drive at about 2000 rpm. I have seen others on here mention it's like driving on a cattle grid. No-one has found what it is. It has also become more and more difficult to engage reverse. Today coming back up the motorway the shake turned into a grinding rough vibration which is worse when I put my foot down and goes away when I take it off. I also found it hard to get into fifth. You can feel it at slow speed but can't really hear it unless you go above 60. There is no vibration revving the engine in neutral and the noise does not change with lock (it's hard to tell though). I am guessing it's the gearbox ? I don't particularly want to scrap the car as I do a lot of miles and I would wipe the value straight off a new one. If I get it repaired (I assume I will be in for the dreaded DMF replacement too) will it be worth it? Is the car likely to go back to trouble free motoring or is it a waste? What I mean is are the gearbox and clutch the weakest parts of this car or is something else expensive liable to go? Thanks for your opinions Steve Quote
Mirez Posted January 16, 2011 Report Posted January 16, 2011 I would say its more likely to be a simple CV joint failing... Quote

Thanks for your opinions SteveDMF and clutch maybe at fault as your having problem engaging gears. Quote
steve_r Posted February 8, 2011 Author Report Posted February 8, 2011 Update Got it back yesterday... Flywheel had siezed itself solid and become a single mass flywheel (presumably an out of balance one) . The driveshafts were shot (one had been running without a boot which makes me wonder what you get for a service but never mind) and the gearbox needed repairs to 2 synchros and a new bearing.. 1500 quid... :-( Actually I think for that lot it could have been worse. Massively better.. Now I've just got one slight problem left - a shaking which seems to be almost like it comes from the road surface and is not cured by knocking it into neutral.. Thanks Steve Quote
SPIKEYJIMBO Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 Before getting the galaxy I had a scenic and that had the same symptoms you describe it turned out to be a worn track rod end with alot of play in it, Might be worth a little look. Quote

steve_r Posted February 16, 2011 Author Report Posted February 16, 2011 Hi I am now going mad and would appreciate any advice... I had the tyres balanced and I thought it was getting better... took it for a service today (different garage) and they said it was shaking. Driving home its got worse and worse till it makes me feel sick. Shakes worse under load but still can feel it while rolling in neutral. Revving the engine while stationary doies not shake. I am going to take it back to the garage that did the flywheel/driveshafts etc tomorrow and see what they say.. Is there anything else that can cause shaking like this or is there something wrong with the repair? Has anyone ever had these parts changed and found them to be faulty afterwards? I feel like I have gone right back round the block to where I was before I started all these repairs. Had enough. Going for a beer now :-( Steve Quote
