paulh Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 What ias everyones opinion on this. I do serious mileage (taxi) so fuel economy and price per litre is very important to me. A while ago I accidentally filled up with Shell V Power diesel, although I noticed after blasting it back from Gatwick how well it was running, so now I run the odd tank through it. Up until quite lately I've been using supermarket diesel the rest of the time due to the price, but I have noticed that I get a better mpg with the better fuel, so I've been using more of that recently. But with todays VAT hike the price of V Power has gone over 141p :) So is 'normal' esso/shell/texaco diesel any different to supermarket styff? I don't mind paying a couple of pence more if its worth it in the long run but the premium stuff is getting ridiculous. What are peoples thoughts? Quote
Dave-G Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 More mineral oil in the fuel equals a bigger bang in the cylinders of the PD diesel engine. I read somewhere that the Govmnt have decreed all diesel shall have some bio in it by whenever - (I know not when) Supermarket diesel apparently has more bio than shell diesel. Whilst some diesel engines handle veg/bio well the PD allegedly does not. I now mainly use shell when I can but avoid supermarket fuels at all times. Quote
zorgman Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 noticed at sainsburys just before i put derv in tank it has 7% bio in, hence it didnt go in. i only ever use shell or bp etc. now theni was on yankee site about tuning tdi engines and they use acetone to bump up the cetane level which more cetane bigger bang, as an experiment i got a small bottle off chemist and i did notce an improvement to idle on car but never went more into it. down road from me is a place that sells glass fibre stuff and they use a lot of acetone so thats where u buy it. if i think on it was 125ml acetone to 25l of derv so ave a search about on net its there somewhere Quote
Jayton Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 PD's defo don't like pure bio/veg - causes big problems and can ruin a PD engine! (apparently) If you can use premium fuels often, go for it. Your car will love you for it.I occasionally use premium fuels, or bung in a 1 shot Redex (although Wynns diesel treatment is considered better than Redex, it's also more expensive) You can also buy centane boosters, I think Redex do one. PS: be careful when sticking things in your tank if you have a PD. The non-PD engines/fuel pumps can cope with different fuels (veg oil, mixed oils/lubricants etc). Quote
SPIKEYJIMBO Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 The last few times I have filled up the galaxy I put in bps ultimate diesel, it is alot more expensive but I feel the car idles better and has more oomph through the gears... Could this just be psychological possibly but I honestly don't think so Quote
Keithb Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 Nothing scientific but I use Millers Ecomax. Drove to Croatia this year and had fantastic power and MPG after filling up in Luxembourg with Shell (40MPG+ even on German motorways). I ran out of Millers on the way home and after filling up at Auchan in Dunkerque my turbo cut out 4 times between Dover and Dorset. So my vote is for Millers Ecomax and avoid at (least French) supermarket fuel. Quote

I use Millers Diesel Ecomax as well for more than one year and be honest when used, car is running better (less smoke, mpg about the same, smoother idle). I used to tank at Shell, but because of Tesco points have switched to Tesco diesel. However now points have been cut and decided to go back to shell even though I have to drive further to fill up.
