mum on the go Posted December 27, 2010 Report Posted December 27, 2010 I am planning to hire a Ford Galaxy for 6 weeks next year to travel around the UK with 3 adults and 3 kids, one of which is still in a booster seat. I currently drive a 7-seat Toyota in Australia and the boot space will definitely not fit luggage for 6 when the rear seats are used so I was wondering if the Galay has the same problem. The Ford specs say it has capacity of 308L but can anyone tell me what the actual dimensions are of the boot when the rear seats are being used? Also how much room is their in the 3rd row? Some of the photos I have seen online show about enough room for a 4 year old, anyone bigger is likely to have their knees around their ears. I have also seen an 8 seat version advertised on car hire sites but have not been able to find any specs. Does this still exist are does this relate to an older model? Or is it just an extra seat belt in the third row with no extra room? Quote
Mirez Posted December 27, 2010 Report Posted December 27, 2010 Very few people carriers offer enough space to carry a full compliment of people and offer luggage space as well - full specs for the Galaxy here: http://www.ford.co.uk/cs/BlobServer?blobtable=MungoBlobs&blobcol=urldata&blobheadervalue1=attachment%3Bfilename%3D%22New+Galaxy+eBrochure.pdf%22&blobheadervalue2=abinary%3Bcharset%3DUTF-8&blobheadername1=Content-Disposition&blobheadername2=MDT-Type&blobheader=application%2Fpdf&blobwhere=1214378503730&blobkey=id Quote
bingo nightly Posted December 27, 2010 Report Posted December 27, 2010 With all the seats in place the Galaxy has about the same luggage capacity as a motorcycle :) Quote
suzuki91 Posted December 27, 2010 Report Posted December 27, 2010 best to use a roof box for light luggage with 7 seats in place, back seats to the rear window when in use. Quote
snowytop Posted December 28, 2010 Report Posted December 28, 2010 With all the seats in place the Galaxy has about the same luggage capacity as a motorcycle :( I think that Quote
chrispb123456 Posted December 29, 2010 Report Posted December 29, 2010 If you have a tow bar a trailer is another option, I have my own but you can hire them if you dont want to buy one :( Quote
mum on the go Posted December 30, 2010 Author Report Posted December 30, 2010 Thanks for the info. If I was to utilise all the seats except one rear seat and leave it folded down, what is the size of the floor space available and how high is the roof? Based on my Toyota I can fit 3 bags measuring 46cm x 71cm x 25cm laying on top of each other in the space where the 7th seat is laying down with approx. 15cm to spare between the end of the bag and the back door provided the end of the bags are pushed up against the back of the 2nd row. As we don't have a Ford this size in Australia I can't pop down to the local dealer to measure the boot space and the Ford website test reviews don't have anyone trying to put luggage in one. Could I fit 3 bags with the above dimensions in the Galaxy, taking up a total space of 46cm x 71cm x 75cm (3 bags laying flat on top of each other)? Quote
Rodders53 Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 Unless you are hiring from an unusual (low cost) source most UK companies will be supplying a post 2006 model which is known here as the Mk3. The rear seats (3rd row) have sufficient space for adults to sit in comfort. There is a little boot space left, but due to the nature of the rear door shape and sloping seat backs it is quite restricted. (The volumes are given in the brchure linked to above). As the seats can be slid fore/aft a little there are two figures. With one 3rd row seat folded down you will get a fairly usable space - but may need to tie stuff down to prevent it tipping onto the 'tail end charlie' occupying the adjacent seat. To give you an idea of the size we carry this shopping scooter http://www.pride-mobility.co.uk/product.aspx?id=48&range=5 in that space (just) with the front basket removed (as it hits the seat back). I make that space to be roughly 102long x 56wide x 95high (although the sloping seat back and rear door reduces the length a fair bit). The roof height is plenty high - just secure the luggage well if you stack it right up! I'd think a UK hire company might provide you with further measurements if you ask nicely. They may also be able to offer roof rails and top box hire if requested. Quote

Thanks Rodders53 precisely the information I need which I haven't been able to get from either the dealerships or the car hire company. Now if it was only permissable to tie the noisy kids or nagging grandma to the roof rack instead of the luggage. LOL! Quote
