Does the Mk1 not have the pump fitted??

From being someone who had the pump fail I can say it is required on the Mk2 as without it the coolant does not circulate to the aux heater, I would have thought the Mk1 would also have it but I've never seen a Mk1 up close so wouldn't know. A lot of the other VWs have the run on pump even without the Aux heater

I think it does - I can usually hear a hum from the engine bay after its turned off and I cant see how water could be reliably circulated otherwise by the engine coolant pump alone. Perhaps someone can check on the service CD (forgot name) Edited by seatkid

no pump near the aux heater under the car, only the fuel pump a bit further away under the chassis im sure i read on here only the mk 2 had it fitted

i read that to, supprising that the main water pump (same as vw golf) has the umf to circualate that far.

Must be then that the MK1's engines 90 & 110 had a better designed engine water pump than the MK2, that had problems with impeller breaking off and not being powerfull enough to circulate through booster and rear cabin heater, thus requiring help from electric pump.

I know the TIS manual has been wrong before, perhaps only a few cars were fitted with the run on pump by the booster heater.

Correct, Mk1's dont have the pump, the only exception being the "cold climate" regions where the auxillary heater has the timer function where a small plastic pump is fitted down next to it...

My MK1 Alhambra certainly doesn't, im wondering if TIS is displaying that as it is needed if you have the factory "Parking Heater" Upgrade, you know the clock is replaced from the 2 button to the 4 button to allow it to be turned on "on demand" even when the car is not running?

P.s. Although i am going to be fitting the pump anyway :-)

I have a separate thread with a few MK 1 Aux heater queries, but my main question is clarification that the mk 1 dosnt have a control module to communicate with vagcom either. Can anyone confirm.

Hi Nige,

I can confirm the MK1 IS a Dumb Unit, it does have a control unit but it doesnt "lock out", it tries 3 times then stops trying until you turn off the ignition and remove the key, then the unit resets it's try counter.

Also due to it being a Dumb unit you CANNOT interrogate it via Vag-Com, only via the Eberspacher diagnosis tools.

The Mk2 However CAN be interrogated via Vag-Com and WILL "Lock Out" after 3 failed attempts to start, can be diagnosed via vag-Com and reset via Vag-Com.

Hope This Helps

just to add to that,,

i fitted a mk 2 DW5 unit from a 03 car to our mkm1 98 reg. this has worked fine for 3 years till 2 days ago when it now fires up runs 5 mins then shuts down before the water is hot. im hoping it just needs the glowplug but even though its a mk 2 model aux heater it still wont connect with vagcom on a mk 1 car

Well as far as the run on pump is concerned - on my Alhambra 1998 Mk1 AHU engine when I turn off the engine there is a quiet hum/buzz that lasts 10 secs or more from the engine compartment.

My car had all the bells and whistles fitted which included a "winter pack" - heated seats, heated windscreen, etc.

That is because the K Line of the aux heater is not connected to the cars wiring loom, if you want to run vag-com on the heater then you can by connecting the vag-com k line to the blue and white cable of the heater and connecting -v to vagcom signal and ground and connect +v to vagcom +supply, if you want more info with a drawing of the connections just ask and i will make one for you, but it is possible to connect it bypassing the car's loom.

looked on the tis disk, no mention of the after run pump on mk 1 galaxy but it does say on the mk 2 section that one is fitted

also on another site i read that some sharans and alhambras mk 1 up to year 2000 had it fitted like seatkid said his had. very strange.

well chaps, has this one baffled us all ? apart from one who suggested it was because the D5W ran hotter than the mk1 D3W , i did stumble on another website that the PD engine was prone to hotspots after shutdown so the pump was actually for this purpose, never having a mk2 as yet , does this make any sense ?

 That seems ironic when we spend most of the time trying to get the engine hot quicker, I know when I first had trouble with my run on pump the rear compartment heater would only get warm not hot like the front heater and if you increased the rear blower to maximum would eventually blow cold and at the same time the booster had started cycling up and down and eventually lock out because it had registered an overheat.

That may be true about the hot spots and perhaps by fitting the run on pump in the flow has brought it's own problem when it goes wrong of restricting the flow through the booster and the rear compartment heaters.

if she leaves me alone in the morning, i am so going to take the fecking run-on pump to bits !!!!!

been under it today doing oil /filter change at mates garage; checked all wires, connectors i could access= all ok

so now needs scanning to see if im locked out.(have been let down once by a person who said they have vagcom) as you would expect i hope to find it was the pump that caused shutdown due to overheating at aux. heater.

oil change took 4 hours-----------------------------new vw sumpbung was a suicide version!! brought all threads out of the sump!!!! 9 o'clock this morning trying to beg/steal/borrow a 14mm helicoil kit when garage was shutting half day. my mate had one so the mrs drove and collected it so then i had a captive audience watching me trying to sort the sump out, the longer i took the later they had to stay.

anyway, job done and the moral is that you should check new sumpbung is ok before you fit it, i think it was too long as there was about 4-5 threads damaged on it.

Hello, Noticed mention of the pump near the heater itself, well it is actually midway along the main metal coolant pipes roughly in-line with the passenger front seat, it only fires up when the Aux heater does. Think mine maybe on it's way as it has gone noisy, tick tick tick tick, either that or a time bomb gonna go off!

If the tick tick tick is noticeable in the car from the front passenger side then I think it is just the aux heater fuel pump as mine does this.

It is normal as it is just some pipes ticking or something like that.

A few people have mentioned the noise and it is a common thing with the galaxy.
