I have a 2000 galaxy tdi which seems to have a oil leak around the oil filler cap and the rocker cover. Its a step oil filler cap and i was wondering if i could be missing a seal

i appear to have the same problem, but i have mayo in mine to, im hoping its a leaking seal allowing oil out and water in, otherwise its off to the scrappie with her.

sorry to hijack your thread, does anyone have past experience with this

thanks

I had same problem when bought gal and to stop leaking I removed whole adaptor and put cap straight on rocker filler.

hi,

this is what ive now done this morning, i removed the plastic engine cover and the sound proofing long ago (sodden with oil).

i thought it may be the oil cap seal though, did u replace yours?

i gotta run one of my boys to a birthday party (joy) so ill see how it fairs

cheers

I guess there wasn't enough pressure between rocker cover and seal on the step bit. I tried to bend lugs but still leaked. Filler cap has own seal and works well. I may buy new one but not bothered atm. (my EGR leaks more than filler cap itself).

just checked it after 5 mile run and theres brown stuff forming under cap, im hoping it is just condensation (it was a quick run and never warmed up) as opposed to a head gasket problem.

ill check it after work tomorrow (40 mile round trip)

interesting u should say about egr valve leaking, i always though that was what was causing the oil leak (out of the tiny hole) but they are quite expensive to replace and look quite a bitch to fit, and besides im not 100% suree that is a problem, car gets good mileage runs pretty well (140k miles) only slight stutter at part throttle.

where in southampton are u from?? i live just outside just moved here

thanks

I have been diagnosed EGR leak and been told replacement would sort it but not necessary. Other way is blank egr and problem solved :35: . Anyway bit of whitish/brown stuff on the cap is normal in cold weather but if you get more of it, also on oil dipstick, it's indicating more troubles.

I live near Texaco petrol pump in Bitterne.

what your talking about is oil emulsification caused by short runs and lack of heat to evaporate water vapour that occurs naturaly in engine, first off check your pipe work for engine breathing goes from engine block to rocker box to air filter, egr valve has nowt to do with it as it only allows exhaust gas into intake manifold for emissions blank it off your engine will thank you for it.

years ago the hillman hunter had major problems with this fault the trick was to stick under carpet felt on rocker box cover to help heat it up which stopped it
