Hi Everyone,

I have a R Plate 2.8 v6 Petrol Ford Galaxy. (Automatic)

Recently it developed a fault where it just wouldn't start a local garage bodged the problem by hard wiring a live feed to the starter motor from the ignition i believe.

It was suggested that the relay that detects what gear the automatic box is in may be at fault , anyone else had this problem and is it an easy fix IE: Replace the relay?

Also....

When COLD the gearbox seems sluggish to select gears , sometimes kangerooing the car as it snaps into gear. This rectifys itself after 5 miles or so when the box is warm?

Low Gearbox Fluid maybe? , If so , how the heck do i get to the top up reservoir on the v6? It appears to be hidden under the bulkhead of the car bodywork by the windscreen.

Many Thanks In Advance for any help or comments.

Hi there

The gearbox inhibitor switch is under the console/gearlever it may just require adjustment or a new switch.

As for the sluggish gear change it may well benefit from a fluid filter change, filter change requires removal of gearbox sump, pretty straightforward on the AG4 transmission unfortunately you are not able to remove all the fluid as the torque converter and valve chest amount to a third of the capacity, so the only diy way is to do three fluid changes and one filter change, in other words change it drive it change it etc you will also need the use of Vag-Com as the temperature of the fluid needs to be between 35 and 45 deg.c when checking level.

Full instructions on how to do this can be found in the FAQ's in the technical section.

However this is a try it and see, it worked for me but you may have an internal fault what is causing your problem so you may need the help of a local transmission repair garage and a big wallet :31:

Thanks very much for your excellent advice , I'll be asking the garage about these points in the morning.

Also do you know if there is a Haynes Type manual or DVD-Rom that covers the 2.8 v6 Model , as iv e never seen one and i've looked. Reason i ask is there are a couple of breather pipes missing or detached under the bonnet and it would be great to see where they go and what i need to buy , this will of course increase my MPG , which couldn't be much worse at the moment.

Thanks Again,

Alex :31:
