olehere Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 I went through the forum a bit but am confused on what the recommended service should be for the timing belt. I am thinking of buying a 1998 Galaxy with 144,000 miles but seller is not sure if the timing belt was ever changed. Can someone give me a thought on this? He said that he might be willing to split the cost of the work with me on the purchase price. In the US, usually on my Lexus, the dealer also recommended changing the water pump as well - the cost was about $350 for all of the work done. Any thoughts on this? BTW, the seller is asking $2795 if you are interested in that detail. Quote
chrispb123456 Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 HowdyWelcome to the site, all the petrol/gas engines in the Galaxy range have timing chains, it's only the diesel versions that have belts. Quote
olehere Posted November 24, 2010 Author Report Posted November 24, 2010 Does the Ford Maintenance plan recommend changing the timing chain at certain intervals?I am trying to understand whether there is a potential maintenance cost issue just ahead. Thanks,Olehere Quote
Bigjeeze Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 Does the Ford Maintenance plan recommend changing the timing chain at certain intervals?I am trying to understand whether there is a potential maintenance cost issue just ahead. Thanks,Olehere Just to be clear - we are talkijng about a European Ford Galaxy - and as has been said it is only the Diesel that requires a cam belt change every 60K miles for a 1998 model. If it is a petrol one then it is a chain and should be good for at least 100K miles . Let us know what engine you have and we can then give you an idea. Regards BJ Quote
Mirez Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 The 2.3 is chain driven not belt and has no scheduled replacement interval. Quote
